Storm Riders

Managed to get out yesterday right on the edge of a big storm front as it came through, it was a fantastic afternoon! Love to see those birds riding the wind and flying through the snow. There's something so captivating about seeing the birds come into focus out of the snow and mist, cup up, and bomb into the decoy spread. I suppose it's what keeps us coming back into the marsh year after year, in nasty weather, and enjoying it! In the low light I mistook a hen pinny for a drake and spoiled my all-drake day, not complaining though!

It didn't help that a few minutes later my dad in law shot one of the nicest drake pintails I've ever seen

It was a fantastic day, and probably the last time on this spot for the year as I'm sure it will freeze this weekend. Hope you guys that still have open seasons are getting out and enjoying it!

I really liked your write up, Cody. But the best thing of all was to see your hen pintail. Makes me feel better because if there was one hen in a flock of 10, I'm sure I would hit the hen. Glad you had a terrific hunt.

Thanks guys! Al, I have been meaning to ask you, I shot a teal last week that was banded near Artesia, New Mexico. Ever been over that way? I looked at it on the map and there is 1 lake and the Pecos river nearby, and I was wondering where the ducks might hang out around there.

Man, what a great day! Can't believe the greenwings are still up there, tough little birds!

Cody,
That is a beautiful photo of your birds. It sounds like you had a Gordon McQuarrie kind of day with the birds suddenly appearing out of the fog and snow.

Carl-we have all 3 types of teal here-bluewing, greenwing, and cinnamon, but usually the bluewings are gone by the time our season opens. The greenwings and cinnamons stick around all season though-I think that teal and goldeneyes have to be the hardiest birds around!
Larry-thank you, it was indeed! I think that Gordon and the President would have enjoyed it very much.

I've been wavering on whether to hunt during the incoming storm tomorrow. My hunting buddy called tonight to cancel as he's got the flu.

Your post put me over the top. Black ducks and whistlers it is. Have a favorite spot that always turns on for snotty days with an east wind, and have the vacation time to burn.

Great looking day, and great report. We haven’t had any good weather hunts this year, looking forward to one.

Still heading out, but gravity is strong at the moment as I look out the window at snow and 14 degrees.

It's an afternoon tide--I have a few hours to let things warm up.

Looks like a pretty good Christmas present to me !!

Certainly a day like we all wait for.
