Winter Storm Warning: Hilton Head, SC style

Guys,
Many of you know that work sent me from Michigan to Hilton Head seven years ago. In Michigan, a "winter storm warning" is issued if there will be at least 6" or more of blowing snow in temps below 20 degrees.

Here on Hilton Head we have been issued the first "winter storm warning" in the 7 years I have been here. The fine print reads: "Winter Storm warning from 6 am Wednesday to midnight Wednesday night for "heavy" mixed precipitation. Total snow accumulation of up to 2" possible. Total ice accumulation of up to one tenth of an inch are expected. Temperatures will range from 28-32 degrees."

I expect there will be a mad rush to the grocery store for bread and milk. This should be interesting to watch the locals attempting to drive in the snow. Up to this time, I"ve only seen one flurrie, yes one FLURRIE, since my wife and I moved here. It was a Sunday afternoon, seven years ago. It was about 34 degrees and the weather people were advising us to stay indoors. I went outside with my magnifying glass and I testify, with my wife as a witness, that we actually, scientifically verified that one flurrie fell in our back yard on Hilton Head Island.

It was a moving experience.

:)

The only real problem with the forecast will be if there is enough ice to knock out power. Everything is electric here. That would be bad.

I hope to get out Friday hunting. Hopefully Carl over in Mobile Bay hasn't killed 'em all by then or Bob Petrisch up in New Bern, NC hasn't short-stopped the potential flight to South Carolina.

Looking with expectant eyes to sky.

Yeah winter storm has a whole new meaning down south!
I’m guessing you haven’t experienced an ice storm in the south yet. They can be pretty horrible. Trees down here just don’t hold up and the power goes out.

Pretty impressive radar signature! Hope the commercial fleet is safe and tucked away in their slips.

My brother is in Cameron, NC and he woke up to what looks like at least 2 inches of snow. He gets a snow day today.

Yesterday, here in Tallahassee we actually had snow and sleet for about an hour. I had just snow coming down steady for about half an hour....big fat fluffy flakes. Too bad it didn't stick around longer but it was enough to turn much of my yard white. Though we got up into the low 40s, there were still ice balls in the shady parts of my yard when I got home yesterday after work. Pretty neat....

My sister who lives in Mount Pleasant, SC, had about 3.5" of snow yesterday at 5pm and it was still snowing like heck. Havent heard from her this morning, not sure how much more they got.

Predictions are that things are going to get really nasty in New England, hurricane force winds.

Snowfall predictions here are for a big storm, but nothing huge, mostly 10-15 inches. Winds look worst in Eastern Maine, which often means the outer Cape and end of Long Island get nailed too. We have hurricane wind warnings for the whole coast with predicted gusts to 65 knots everywhere late today and tonight. Eastern Maine's marine forecast is calling for steady winds of 40-50 knots, with gusts to 70.

If you like watching storms as they pass, this site has real time buoy observations from south of Cape Cod out to the Maritimes. Good for entertainment while on a slow conference call . . . . .

Just click on a buoy to see recent observations and trends.

Might get out tomorrow. Went out Tuesday, took out a marine from Camp LeJeune, he got one shot only at some broadbill.
We did enjoy watching several score of scoter playing all day long. We put out a mixed rig with the boat on the beach......should have anchored out where the scoter were.

Everything is closed here due to storm. They call two inches of snow a storm. In Michigan they call that Tuesday. The water is way out, down about two feet due to strong winds.

You are still welcome to visit here. The birds have not been where I’ve been

My son is in Mt Pleasant and he said they got 6 inches. Roads will refreeze again tonight, going to be a mess for folks down there. I am North of Columbia, SC and we didn't get a single snowflake. Weird storm for us for sure.

The struggle is real for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Prayers for safety all along the East Coast!

Things are maybe starting to wind down here. Still snowing, maybe 15" on the ground, but hard to tell with the drifting. Winds never got as extreme as they predicted. I saw a few spots on the coast gusting to 50 knots, but nothing like the 65-70 that was forecast.

Biggest news seems to the tides. 2nd highest tide on record for Portland today at noon since records started in 1914. The highest was the blizzard of '78.

Someone just posted a Facebook picture of Route 1 in Lincolnville, Maine, completely under water. Looks like 6-12 inches of water over the road. Not sure this link will work, but you can try it:
