Nice Morning on the Water

Beautiful morning on Mobile Bay, too bad the ducks didn't cooperate.
With this huge cold snap I though we would be covered up with birds. Does not appear to be the case.
Lots of guys out and really not the amount of shooting I was expecting.
I saw quite a few gadwalls, but they were all rafted up and not flying. The three big rafts that came close (as in 200 yards away) swam in from open water.
Didnt see a single diver other than a few buffies when I went scouting.
Very strange.

Right before shooting time:

Right? More sane people would stop trying to outsmart a creature with a brain the size of a pea. But not us!!!

Well Carl, you aren't the only one who thought this cold would have brought birds down. We too thought the cold would move woodcock down here. We hunted the woodcockiest looking woodcock cover ever today. Didn't even get a wiggly tail in our walk through the woods. Maybe they all froze their little noses to the dirt up north or something. Ah well. We will try a different place tomorrow and maybe we will get lucky.

Id be thrilled to chase ringnecks with all the crazies. But it is woodcock season and ive fallen in love with those little stutter stepping birds. So with the ability to sleep in, usually shots at a woodduck or two and the possibility, slim as it is, of quail we decided to forgo the crazies crowd and go looking for some doodles.

I think a solitary walk in the woods with the pup was definitely a finer choice!
