I'm really happy thus far, especially with the blending of the cape, not so much with the feather detail but I hope to crisp that up when I do the lighter next color. I can't seem to find the time to walk to the boathouse to get the caulk to attach the heads, but that's soon, then touch ups. Thanks Steve for everything.

When you guys are painting textured decoys do you thin out the paint? I think I'm going the wrong way by going full strength to try to get enough paint on the side to seep into the nooks but to me it's too opaque, like a pinstripe on a Buick. The flip side is runny or thin paint.
Thoughts?

Good morning, Mc~

I avoid thinning the paints - only do so on the finishing touches. I want the initial covering coat (over the primer) to both fills some interstices (nooks & crannies) AND to be tough as snails.

I thin for details - like streaking on a puddle duck face, feather edging, et cetera. I presume this renders the paint less durable - but these are never areas where the primer would be revealed if they were worn through.

I add as little water as I need to make the paint flow for details. I usually put the paint on palette paper then wetten (is that a word?) the brush "to taste".

Glad to see you've got the Crew hard at work.

See you soon,

SJS
