Did you ever drop a duck into your boat

One early morning I was sneaking up a creek along the Mighty Hudson River. My older brother was in the front of the boat. As I was drifting into the creek. I watched a flock of about eight drakes flying in and land in the mouth of the creek. I told my brother to get down and be ready. As tide pushed us around the first bend. The birds were on the left. My brother couldn't swing his gun fast enough to take them as they jumped. He waited for them to swing in front of the boat. He shot three times missing each bird as they went by. As I'm yelling at him I look back and two woody's and high tailing it down the same creek. I turned around and dropped both of them in the boat. Hitting me both times. It hurt like hell for a while. But what a laugh we got out of it. I forgot all about those mallards. We pulled over later that morning. Fired up the stove ,cooked those woody's for lunch. Trust me! I missed more then my share of ducks in the front of the boat. This time it was big brother. Made it that much better of a day for me. When I dropped two WOODY'S in the boat. If your the little brother you'll know what I'm saying. Thanks for reading.

I didn't drop one in the boat by my hunting buddy Joe Belardi came really close. He left me off at a blind we built and went a 1/2 mile away to the center of the channel to fish for bass. A pair of buffleheads came down the channel at supersonic speed. Joe dropped his fishing rod, picked up his gun and fired. The drake dropped right next to the boat and he reached over and retrieved it. It came down about 2 feet from him.

Never in the boat but had to dodge one or two that seemed like they were going to hit us. Definately got splashed!
Like noted, just had to reach over the gunnel to pick them up.

Good thing that didn't hit you in the head. I got hit by a goose in a corn field once or twice. Thought I broke my neck the one time. Thanks buddy for the post.

They fly so fast! but I think they drop out of the sky even faster. I know the pair of woody's that hit me hurt like heck. But they were not even that high in the sky. So I know if one of us pull a great shot and it lands in the boat it could break your neck. I had a flock of teal almost take me out one time. Those little buggers jumped and came right at me. I didn't even think about pulling my gun up. It happen so fast. Thanks as always for your great post.

This past goose season there was a fella struck by a falling Canada goose in his layout blind here in md. They had to take him to E.R. with concussion. On a lighter note several years ago I caught a falling mallard a friend shot passing head on to blind. I was still young enough than to have some similarity of good reflexes ! We Have had shot birds fall on roof of big blind which when everyone is shooting will make you duck!

That's the truth. A goose in the head is no joke. I almost got killed by a turkey one time. Shot it and it flew right into the blind I was hunting in. That my friend scared the living you know what out of me. Thanks Roy for the nice post.

Not in the boat but right next to the boat. So close that my lab just reached over the side of the canoe and lifted it up and gave it to me. He looked at me like REALLY?!?! Why did you bring me along if I can't even get out and go get some birds?

Oh! your so nice giving your dog the day off like that. That must of been so funny to watch him just put his head over the side and grab the bird. Thanks for your post nice story.

I’ve had snow geese fall close to me before
One time while dove hunting I shot a dove coming straight over me and it fell right into the pile with the other ones I had shot. Have also had it where I got a head shot which made it spread it’s wings in that slow spiral decent and my brother went and caught it a few yards from where we were sitting

Your brother should join the nfl. If he can catch a dove he sure can catch a football. In NY we can't hunt doves. See them a lot. I have eaten them. There yummy!. I wouldn't want to get hit by a falling snow goose . I know that would do damage. Thanks you for your post.

I dropped a brant into my friends Carolina skiff. It landed on the console and bent the ignition key. I get grief about it at least once a year from him.

Over the years I've dropped two ducks that got stuck in trees, and dropped one goose on my buddy. Hit him in the front shoulder. Luckily for both of us, he saw it in time to turn away. Hell of a sight!

How did you get the birds out of the trees? When it comes to geese your not telling me nothing I don't already know. I was hunting in a corn field once with my back next to a round hay bail. Two low flyers came by. The first one I shot then went to the second one . Before I knew it! I was hit right in the head. I could not hardly move. My friends thought my neck was broke. Thank the GOOD LORD nothing was broken. Just hurt like heck for a long long time. Thank you for your nice post.

A couple of years ago it had been warm, I had not been hunting but a few times, and it had been really slow. My dog was getting really antsy hanging out in the boat. Another slow day, finally a black duck comes in and swings over me, I shoot it, it falls in the boat. The dog walks two feet, picks it up, gives me a look, we called it a day.
