The first swallowtailed kites are being seen now

That means that these and other critters like them are on the move and need to be watched out for. Even the non poisonous varieties don't like being sat upon.

And even better??!?!?!?!?!!? That means that TURKEY SEASON IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!! Saturday opens the turkey season for us in most of FL. I'm hoping it's a great one and that we have plenty of gobblers waiting to come and visit us like this beauty

So while most people are celebrating St. Patrick's Day with a drink and some festivities, we will be starting it out listening for the intoxicating sound of a gobbler.....

Good luck Dani!
Our season opens this weekend as well.
Turkey's here were gobbling before winter came back, I haven't heard of any reports lately.

I figured from the title, you were getting ready to turkey hunt. Good Luck!!!! I love the rush that comes from being up close to a strutting gobbler. Hope one gives you a display you'll never forget.

C'mon tomorrow morning!!! I took first two days of season off work... hopefully I'll find a bird between those two days.

Dave....I know, I know....I'm pretty predictable this time of year. Turkeys are probably my favorite to hunt of everything.

Kyle and Carl, if you go, GOOD LUCK! Hope y'all get one.

Paul....kinda close on the first osprey :) do the eagles stick around all winter?

Dani--what is that snake you are handing?

As for Turkeys, we are still 6 weeks from my season. If any are around, they'd be easy to find right now, dragging their tails through the 34 inches of snow we've had since last week. 16" of wet slop last W-Th, followed by 18" of slightly drier stuff yesterday and last night.

On the other hand, I am getting reports of woodcock being seen in areas with bare ground--which is pretty much limited to the intertidal zone right now.

I have been in this house for 45 years and that is the first and only Eagle I've ever seen. Very cool....In a snowstorm no less.

Jeff, its a rat snake and the folk around here often call them oak snakes. I have one that will guard my bird feeder from time to time for me. That one was a gorgeous one about 40 inches long.

I have seen some pictures of woodcock in the snow lately. Poor little doodles. They could come down here where it is muuuuch warmer.

Paul, that is really cool about the eagle.

Jode, thats a nice buck you have there. I have a couple of nice bucks but I have found them in the woods on deer that I would guess other hunters have lost. The latest one was a 7 point...one of the brow tines was forked. One of these days I may shoot one of my own. I love venison and it's been a while since I've had a nice tenderloin.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, we see eagles around our office so often the thrill is gone.
There is a nest within a mile of us.

Good luck Sat. I am just waiting for the snow to melt and the lakes to open up. I'm feeling better day by day and doing what I am told by the docs.

Good morning, Dani~

Spectacular!

I saw a Groundhog running across the now the other day...and Red-wing Blackbirds and White-throated Sparrows at the feeder. All serpents are still sound asleep.

While you're chasing Mister Longbeard, we'll be putting more firewood into the stove and puttering on boats and decoys.

(Our Spring Turkey Season is the month of May.)

All the best,

SJS
