Where did spring go?

Enjoy the "non commute". One of the best parts of retirement. We just missed this one and are happy about that. Still one day closer to open water.

This past Wednesday was the first time this season we had enough snow to shovel..... 4 or 5 inches was all, and gone the next day! Fine with me. If I can't hunt in it, I don't want it!

Yeah... Glad it came later than they said, as I didn't land in CR until 9:00 night. It should be gone by Monday when I go to London.

We caught a bit of late winter two days ago. Almost 6" of really nice igloo/snowman snow. Most is now gone, thanks to the sun. Had a fun time Thursday with the snowblower. Kind of made up for what we didn't get when real winter was here.[whistle]

Measured what was on the picnic table, 13.5 inches. Yesterday everything including the ground was bare. It is supposed to rain Monday evening which will melt what doesn't melt before that. I did clear half the driveway. Pavement was actually wet below the snow cover.

We have had lots of snow (now turned to hard ice) on the ground everyday in March so far. I don't ever recall that before. The low tonight is 17, so it will still be here for awhile. Deer and turkey are having a hard time now. Warm up next week should improve things

The trout streams do look very good though. Cabin fever, painting and carving, are about to be put on hold for awhile. Thank Goodness!

We have had plenty of snow this month, but it is mostly gone. I was out this morning... lots of killdeer and woodcock and blackbirds on territory. Saw a woodchuck too.

Good morning, Dave~

We had a foot about a week or so - but missed this last nor'easter altogether. I am happy for the snow cover because I'm trying to cut and haul my firewood (for the 2019-2020 season) out of the woods. I've been cutting for a couple of hours the first thing each morning - while the ground is still hard from the sub-freezing nights. Every afternoon is a taste of Mud Season and I'm trying to avoid rutting up the whole farm.

All the best,

SJS

20 plowable storms here so far, but I don’t hate you . . . .

Last year the lakes around here were open the first week of March. I'm guessing at least 2 more weeks if we finally get some average temps...and that's a big if.
The moisture is nice so I'm not going to complain. We had thunder showers Friday before it snowed so the snow total was only about 3" here. My brother in sw MN had pictures that looked like yours.

3 weeks until my onions arrive for the garden, that might be pushing it some.

No snow on my roof today and I can see pavement on all but one shady corner of my driveway. First time in a month for either.

The pile at the top of the driveway has shrunk to where I can see over it to my boat shed.

Maybe spring will come after all.

Opening day for open water fishing is next Sunday, but I don't think I'll break out the snowshoes to get my local streams just yet.

They call it April Fools Day for a reason.

Sublimation and a high sun angle have cut the snow depth back to 14" on average. Last night's steady rain and sustained temps. in the 40s should finally break things up. We have had a pair of wolves hanging around a pod of overwintering deer a little over a quarter mile from the house, showing-up every three to four weeks. Coyotes were yipping it up out there yesterday morning when I went out with the dogs. I found where they had pulled a small yearling down yesterday while out on the snowshoe trails.

Coho are active inshore, but the icepack has denied access for most of the last month. The runoff combined with the elevated sun angle should have zooplankton and invertebrate activity starting to swing upward markedly. I pulled the tarp off the duck boat and hooked up the battery after it spent some time on the charger.

Mark Hirvonen sent this pic of a Chocolay River brown trout he caught casting spinners in an open water hole by the Iron Belle Trail bridge:

A typical inshore spring mixed catch taken about eight miles east of the lower harbor.

C'mon spring!!

Spring sure ain't here, but Spring cleaning is! [frown]

Domestic duty had me clean the carpets today, before Easter Sunday family dinner.

Seems like someone that spends lots of time outdoors, and the family dog, did not take off their shoes, or wipe their feet, as they should have.

Windows are open, but the warm spell never arrived. Still lots of snow on the ground.

Fly fishing for trout, cold weather or not, cannot get here fast enough.

Photo's of those fish made me hungry, and that's good cuz I fish better when hungry.

We seem to have gone backwards again.

Was up in your neck of the woods this past weekend Tim. Did the SoDak triangle - DeSmet, Watertown, Millbank, Webster, DeSmet run. I see the spring migration of snows is underway. Saw flocks of thousands, many landing in our fields.
