waders or hip boots

As I'm getting older! (58 not well) I'm letting the young bucks do all the hard work as far as duck hunting goes. I never used hip boots all my life. I always was a wader man. I love walking through the swamps and bays. But today the doctors tell me not to do these kind of things. Do I always follow what they say. That would be a big fat know. But this time I have to. Or I might not be typing to you guys anymore. So I need your help. Waders or hip boots which way should I go. Should I keep using waders and think that I'm going to follow the doctors orders. Or should I go to hip boots knowing I can't walk in the deeper water. I really would like to hear from you. Thanks God Bless

I will only say...

I used to have waist waders... liked then just fine.. until I fount the hole that was 6" deeper than the waist of the waders.

You do not have to wade deep, or at all, to appreciate waders.

They are a good protective barrier for more than just water. Did you ever spill a hot cup of coffer in your lap, while reaching for your gun for birds that suddenly appeared?

Seldom is there a dry place to sit while waterfowling, and when it rains or snows, the waders keep ya dry and warm. Hip boots can't do that.

A decent pair of breathables are light and easy on and off. You can layer as light, or as heavy as you like for weather conditions.

I have never had a pair of hip boots keep me dry while hunting, or fishing. One way or another water will get in from the tops.

my 2 cents

How deep is the water ma ma??? Great if you have a few young bucks to chase the cripples, put out the rig, pick them up. If you can wade in the rig, great... If not waders and do you want to be warm? Love my neoprene , big belly waders, Warm...

I've worn hip boots my whole hunting life. I walk a lot of marshland and I've thought it was easier with hip boots. I wear jeans under them when warm and Gore-Tex / thinsulate pants or bibs when colder or raining. Seems a lot easier when nature call too. If the only way to keep the doctors happy is with hip boots then there are work arounds.

I agree with you, This year I went with a 3 mm pair. I got them a few sizes big so I can put warmer clothes under them. I normally ware the heavy 5 mm but they are harder to put on now days. Thanks Vince

Smart choice, I have never use hip boots always used waders. Trust me I had my share of waders, Wish I had the money today that I spent on them. But if you take care of them they will take care of you. Thanks for your post
