romantic and untouchable

The sky
was a perfect blue

romantic and untouchable

far away and up

into a different world

as far as I could see

wild and alive
forever

something I could nearly touch

i laid down in the dry september grass
alone
but for my old bird dogs

they laid right with me
& we took a rest

took off my big black boots
& laughed aloud

had a blast of something strong
to keep me ok
thinking
how lucky i was

a crazy lost soul
in a place
nobody'd ever know

I'd finally made it

gigantic billowing clouds
blew away
up and free

like they were set loose to do just that

i watched them float up
high and over me

the cranes and geese were flying south
calling
to anyone
that might hear

I could chase the dogs all day
i could do anything

hard and real
lean
and ready

in wild mountains

deep canyons
and riffles in creeks far below

that called me down to them

i could go as far as I wanted

i could have pushed it past the edge of the hillsides

but I pulled it back
my great restraint

with a hunting vest full of birds
my old 20 gauge
and the dogs to attend to

the creek had nearly run dry

but there was still just enough water

for me and the dogs to get a loop
