Cackler Update and Question on Wedges

All,
As you can see, work is progressing and we are starting to fair. We got that aluminum strips screwed and 5200?d in place. We decided to install the screws every 4 inches on a zig-zag pattern since the aluminum is 1-1/2 inches wide. Good news is, the epoxy survived 3 yrs in the garage and is working like new. Bad news is, the tube of 5200 was still pliable on the nozzle end, but the plunger was stuck tight. Fortunately, they stock it at our local Home Depot.

Since we had not had a good wedge debate in a while, thought I?d ask if any other Cackler builders out there felt the need for wedges. If so, did your boat porpoise, and, how big were the wedges? I ended up putting them on my BB2, but would like to put them on the Cackler now (if needed) as it is so much easier at this stage and looking down at the work, rather than lying on your back dripping epoxy in your hair.

Can't answer your wedge question Bill but a little tip for the next time you use 5200. Keep 5200 in the freezer when you aren't going to need it right away. Stays good to go for a long time. I've got some in there now that is at least 3-4 years old. Thaw it out over night and it'll be fine.

I tend to buy the toothpaste tubes of 5200 now, unless I have a big project. The caulk tube is cheaper, but doesn't seal well after use. I have not tried the freezer, though I use the frig and it lasts until the tube is empty.

All,
I emailed Sam and he suggested 3/8x3x10 wedges, so I went ahead and ran wedges from the keelson to the chine. This is about 11 inches.

The wedges were easy to cut out of scrap 3/8 meranti with a cheap table saw. You can see some of my ?crude? construction technique, and it sure is easier to do it right side up than upside down! Will add a few layers of scrap 6 oz cloth from the sheathing tomorrow and call it good. Hopefully we?ll be happy with the trial runs. I did not initially put wedges on my BB2 and it porpoised. Ended up running wedges made from scarfing scrap all the way across the sponsons to trim it out.

Pete,
Thanks. Should have thought of that- I have successfully kept aquaseal in the freezer for years. Maybe I can put it next to the frozen Can I keep saying I am going to get stuffed- the wife would sure love that!

Seriously, do you notice any 5200 smell from keeping it stored in the freezer? Those isocyanates are bad actors and I try to minimize contact with them.

Thanks,
Bill

Dave,
Thanks. I bought one of those 3oz tubes at the same time as the 10 oz calking tube. Planned on using the calking tube for the keelsons, and figured it would go bad before we got to the deck hardware. From Pete's post I am considering a beer (I mean 5200) storage fridge for the garage.....

Bill, I notice an odor from the 5200 in the frig. I use the garage frig and that is a beer and soda frig mostly, rarely any food that is not sealed.
