Boats fixed safety check done, decoys all setup, HIP number, Duck Stamps, New shells, guns cleaned and checked, Its on. With only a few week left until early goose season here in New York. I can't believe its almost here. I just had my 59 birthday on August 5, Got some new Hidgon battleship black duck decoys form filled. Can't wait for duck season to use them. I got some new Avery Green head gear harvest goose decoys. Really sweet, I have so many decoys. But I can't help myself, that's all I ever ask for. I'm still like a child in that since. Just wanted to share my enthusiasm with all my friends. Hope all is well with everyone

Anthony~

I, too, am fired up about the upcoming season - mostly by getting gear ready for others!

I tried getting my HIP in July - but "no go" - and some other vendor had taken the site name (I alerted DEC).

Once August 1 rolled around, I did get the 5th one issued for this year (was sound asleep right after midnight....)

I bought and signed my Duck Stamp in July. I always print up a small card with my HIP on one side and Duck Stamp on the other - to keep in my wallet next to my license and a card with legal sunrise/sunset times.

I still do not have my NYS license. I always buy on-line as I still worked for DEC back when they began selling on-line - so it's mostly out of professional curiosity. It is not an easy site to navigate. I could not find how to purchase Turkey privileges - so gave up and sent another note to DEC.

I no longer chase September Canadas - so I can wait a bit before I'm fully-licensed. Otherwise, I just need a new winch strap on my duckboat trailer. (Tested the lights this morning and replaced to spare last week.)

All the best,

SJS

Gentleman, its been a long, long, hot summer here on the Lower Eastern Shore of Md. and I can,t wait for it to be over! Our dove & resident goose start 9/1 and although it can still be pretty warm here in sept. I,m ready to get after them! Even picked up a new 20 gauge SX3 win. but unfortunately sent it right back to win/browning as it patterns about 8 to 10" high at the 16 yd. mark. They,ve just completed work and assured me it now shoots 50/50 so waiting for its return to see. Hoping to try it out on a crow hunt middle of the month .

Hoping to get into the garage today to get started on making ready for the upcoming season. Go a whole lot to do. September around here is great saltwater fishing so I've only gotten out once in the past for resident/September geese.

Still debating whether or will hunt early teal or goose this year, its usually so dang hot down here, throw in the mosquitos and no-see-ums and its hard to get the motivation.

the recent rains have watered the marsh well- was out there for a clays shoot on Thursday its looking good- only two more of our summer shoots to go-
and I drilled out the rivets on the broken blind support on the boat and sent that home with the guy whose welding employee makes them for us - plus two more to extend the blind off the back.

so the boat is almost ready

added another LC Smith Longrange to the quiver last month (a field grade this time, but with ejectors, only about 10% of the field grade had them) - and more Kent Bismuth to the ammo pile - so the artillery is ready

the license came in the mail a few days ago
I splurged on a lifetime back 10-12 years ago when NY was going to jack up the price- i figured one less thing i would have to spend money on when i quit working full time

and actually remembered the duck stamp when driving by the post office last week.

so- still have some of the cork mallards from 2 years ago to reshaped (i did blacks last year and like the newer way i did them - so some contouring and painting to do on the mallards)

I, too, am looking forward to this upcoming season, although I haven't made any preparations yet. Me and my crew finally got our hunting cabin back in shape last December after almost two seasons of repairs. When that isn't operational, it really crimps my hunting, as I am past the point of wanting to haul my boat(and self) around, and prefer to hunt the local marshes near the cabin.I'm hoping to get back to form-that's at least 15 outings in a season. It is more fun for me to spend Friday night there and hunt Saturday without getting up at 4AM. During the week, I like to get out mid-day after a couple of hours in the office to make me feel like I've accomplished something. Going to be enjoying the creature comforts again after time on the marsh-leaving the heat on so it's warm when I get back in, having a full kitchen to cook something, no need to pack the vehicle full of gear. And I've spent the summer trap shooting once a week to get used to the fairly new Benelli Vinci. Next up is to pattern a couple different brands of bismuth to see what gives me the best chance, and replace the springs on my boat trailer. Don't really need to do much beyond that, but not sure how much I'll hunt the first split, which is only a week. I have some fly fishing to do first......

I'm glad to see your as happy as I am about the up coming season. I haven't got my new license yet. As you know! I don't need it for early goose hunting. But everything else is ready to roll. I too keep my hip number and stamp near my licence. And I do write sunrise and sunset down and carry it along with the Hudson River tide chart. You always have smart ideas. I enjoy your feed back Thanks, Good luck and be safe.

Hot as heck here in upstate NY, Now its been raining for almost three weeks it seems. Glad to see your getting ready to get some early geese. Tell you the truth I never liked it at first but now I love it. I go out on the Hudson find a shady spot and enjoy the morning and evening hunts. I love it because I hunt in camo shorts and a tee. Its really enjoyable. Thanks for your post. Good luck and God Bless.

Bought shells a couple weeks back. Got both kayaks ready. Got the mini mud motors working. Waders good. Went today and got the big duck boat out to clean. It was at this point I rememebered I burned out my stern light. And I don?t think it is a simple stern light issue. Wiring must be bad somewhere. Darn, here I thought I was getting ahead of it all this year.

If there was a "like" function, I'd be liking this like crazy. This is pretty much the whole duck season for me anymore. We hunt central FL (not as much as we used to) and we haven't had particularly cold days. On one hand, LOOOOOVE that....on the other, the mosquitoes are a major pain. Whoever invented thermacells is my hero!!!

In about two weeks, we'll be going gator hunting and then shortly after that, assuming no hurricanes, we'll be hitting the road to go to MT....upland bird season opens up September 1. I'm quite excited thinking about it!!! Heck, I'll even be back in time for the teal season here. So I might even hunt the teal season.

Its always something pal, Sometimes I think we are never totally ready. Its always something. Last year I went through my checklist. Had everything done. Dam boat never started , never got out of the launch. Missed opening day first time ever. I was really upstate. So don't feel bad. Thanks for the post

I'm not! I haven't even had a chance to think about, well maybe think about, getting ready for the season. I'm having a wedding at my house in a few weeks and kids and work has taken up my time/summer and to top it off I cracked a rib over a week ago so all work has slooooowed down, which is aggravating. I don't do early Goose so hopefully after the chaos ends I will have enough time to go through all the decoys, boat and everything before Oct 6th. It's going to be tight as usual. A couple years ago I started making a list of everything that needs to be repaired/done before the next season at the end of the season so at least I know what I need to do at a minimum before the season starts. Its a fairly short list this year. Maybe next year I will have time for the Pintails I want to carve.

LOL...me too Mark! New to me boat, needs transom boards replaced and camo paint. New PPF longtail mm kit on order. Motor for it sitting in the garage. Redid running gear on new to me trailer for said new to me boat. Reran existing wire for new trailer lights on new to me trailer then discovered last night the wiring old owner used has wrong end on it to plug into truck! Need to plug. Figure some kind of blind for new boat. Every year I tell myself...next year I'll be ready!...NOT!!!!

Yes, it's hard to believe that the season is just around the corner. Our early metro goose season and the teal only season opens Sept 1 here in Iowa. Along with the dove season on Sept 1.

I have been doing some repair work off and on between haying; on my pumpkin seed. I had to do some glass repair work. And I stripped all of the old camo cord grass off. I get about three years out of my cord (saw) grass before I have to totally replace it. It really helps keeping the boats in side a machine shed closed up in the dark and out of the weather. My big boat with saw grass and tumble weeds is going on five years. the tumbleweeds over the top of the saw grass really helps keep it from getting beat up from going down the road.

Once our season starts on the first; we literally have an open season to hunt something until April 15, 2019 when the conservation order ends. We hit a dead time at the Mid- January when the Canada season closes until sometime in Feb when the snows start to show up but other than that; it's game on. Of course during that time slot we can hunt crows or coyotes if we have snow.

By the time April rolls around; even my saint of a wife who has a lot of patience; starts to wonder if the hunting will ever end
