funny story

Headed out this morning to mark my spots for Duck hunting on the Hudson River. On Saturday went out for early goose season. Saw a bunch of mallards and a few geese nothing in shooting range. As my oldest son and I headed into the bays we hunt. Not a bird was in site. One of my friends cut us stakes to put our signs on. Little did we know these stakes were giant trees. What a pain in the butt. My son worked so hard to get these this in the water. They had to be eight or nine feet tall. Left the chain saw at home. So we had to try to get these things to stay in the mud. My son was hanging off them like Tarzan trying to get them in the mud.
We finally got them all set. Headed back to the boat launch and guess what. Fifty geese swimming in front of the boat ramp. We both started cracking up. Those dam bird swam around us like we were general Custard and they were the Indians. They finally flew off sending us a message. Don't come looking for us without a gun. True story

Years ago Md. use to turn loose mallards in late august / early sept. for hunting in the fall. Birds had been raised around people and were accustomed to being fed when people were around. Come hunting season many a morning I,d put the boat over in the midst of these park ducks as we affectionally labeled them and often return to the ramp and have to shoo them out of the way to reload. Mornings that no wild birds were flying we,d always get a chuckle about all the birds being at the boat ramp. If you could ever get them to leave the area they had been deposited in they did decoy pretty readily though! Unforunately the places where DNR dropped them in a creek that abutted a hwy. most simply walked up the bank, onto the rd. , and got run over by traffic.

Thanks for sharing your story, Its sad all those mallards were hit by cars. These geese I ran into could of cared less about me and my son. I tried to make them more wild. Hope it worked. Or when winter comes and know one is around to feed them they will died also I guess. Thanks again, happy hunting
