was handed something pretty cool today

That was fast, we have a winner.
They are jess'es (I am sure I am spelling that wrong) for tethering live decoys (tollers or Judas birds).
At this point there shouldn't be anyone alive who has used them "legally" in America.
One of the more seasoned members of my Rotary club handed them to me today at lunch, they were his uncles and I am sure were used here in Maryland probably on the Eastern shore but could have been right here on the Potomac.
They fit well with my sneak boat, cork blocks and hammer guns...I admit I like outboards and gore tex though.....

Good morning, Lawrence and Dave~

Very cool! I have never seen jesses for waterfowl before (familiar with them on falcons). It never occurred to me that they would be so elaborate. What a great addition to your gunning memorabilia.

All the best,

SJS

My great Grandfather was a market hunter and he told my grandfather he would hobble one duck place them behind him in the marsh and place the other in the decoy spread and they would constantly talk back and forth to each other he did this long after it was outlawed according to my grandfather. When he was done hunting he would release them and they would fly home to the coop. I don't know if this is true or not but i still have his 12 gauge and 10 gauge in damascus steel.
