Looking for a vintage duck hunting print

Looking for a vintage duck hunting print
Here is a weird request. My wife is searching for a print to replace an awful floral print. The requirements are simple. It has to be in portrait mode, and it has to be 18? X 24?. My preference is a vintage duck hunting print not a picture.

I know this is rather odd but know many here are really knowledgeable on this sort of request.

See if Rich Oxley still has prints. He used to go to the decoy show at the Thunderbird but I haven?t gone for the past several years so I haven?t a clue if he?s still selling prints.

Les Kouba prints can be found, originals and re-prints. I love his work.
I have his "Canvasbacks" print, I think I got it from Basspro or Cabelas around 20 years ago.
Google "Les Kouba prints" and you can find them.

Another option I would like to suggest is vintage maps of your favorite hunting area. I have several old maps that I intend to frame and my wife is much more fond of those than hunting themed prints.

Good morning, Mark~

Interesting request - with the "portrait" orientation making it more challenging...

As Braden mentioned, on my shop walls I have maps (bay charts, more precisely) and duckboat plans (from Smithsonian) framed. These, though, are in "landscape".

Happy hunting!

Mark,

You might try Minnesota Historical Society. They have a reproduction service.

For photographs, Nick's recommendation of an Oxley print would be good. I know there is a anthology of his prints in coffee table book, so you should be able to dig something up. Oxley had a web site at one point, also. Most of the pictures are from the Lake Christina area and Fergus Falls.

If looking for something vintage, I might recommend reaching out to John Schroers in Shakopee. He has a frame shop down there and he's got a lot of contacts and history. http://1stavepictureframing.com/about.php

Good luck,

Rob

Check ?A B Frost?. A lot of neat prints come up on EBay by him. Some of his original ?Shooting Pictures? prints are expensive but there are lots of reprints and duck hunting prints were published in vintage magazines such as Schribners as well. Some are larger double page. You can probable pick them up cheaper if you can figure out the issue and buy the magazine instead of just the print.

Might want to contact Worth and see if he still has any of Dave Hagerbaumer's prints available.
This is one of Dave's prints I got from Worth a few years back (The Mallard Shooter). It's hanging out in the studio, and the outside dimensions of the frame are 19" x 23"

That could be you in your "Ducker," Mark!!

Any of the waterfowl prints by John James Audubon's Birds Of America, though not hunting specific.

They appeal to everyone, and are timeless classics.

The Canvasbacks, in a barn wood frame, are part of my collection.

Ducks Unlimited magazine July/August 2018, has a very good article. Audubon The Hunter by Chris Madson that is well worth reading.

Mark,

Before you buy anything take a look at the American Sporting Gallery. It is a small gallery littered with amazing sporting art, all originals, no prints. It is in my home town of Millbrook, NY. I walk by the gallery a least once a week just to look in the window at all the amazing art. Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming and drooling on the window sill. He has a piece of work called " Poling to the blind" by Lou Shifferl....my favorite among many others. I become totally entranced when I walk inside. The artwork will take your mind to the very marshes we all dream about, my rendition of what I hope heaven to be. Take a look at the link below.

Enjoy and good luck finding the perfect piece to fill the blank space!

Not a weird request. I was trying to think of an avenue for you, and I realized that many of the galleries and sporting shops that once carried prints are now gone, with few exceptions. But one thing you could do is google up your favorite wildlife (waterfowl) artists. You will find many opportunities to purchase items which you will love and fit into your house.
If you need any ideas, let this group know. I doubt if any here will be shy about letting you know their favorite waterfowl artists, nor would I.

Thanks for all he input and advice. Lot's of cool artwork our there to chose from. We ended up deciding upon a print done in 1905 by Evgeny Alexandrovich Tichmenev. It has the "look" we wanted. This is going in our cabin bedroom and is being used to hide something. The next print we will spend some money on as it will be going in the family room above the fireplace and visible to many. Here is what we went with. Wife and I both agreed on it which means it has to be "the one"

You made a very good choice.

North American Art in St. Paul handles the bulk of our DU printing & framing. You could email over there to see if they have what you are looking for. If they don't I am sure they can find something & they are very competitive on pricing.
