Machete

There are lots of different designs that are better suited for certain terrains i.e. grasses vs woody vs briars/vines. Are you looking for a good general purpose machete or is there a certain type of brush that is more prevalent?

Most of the machetes are junk. Needed one to chop bait, paid $3 at gun show, cheap junk. Check yard sales for brush hook, heavier with long handle.

General purpose use it for every thing but I want some thing that is solid. Most blades are in my opinion are to thin I think you should have a blade 3/16 thick.

Bought the one I use many years ago, at the Outdoor Army/Surplus Store. $10-$15 I do believe.

Has a decent handle/grip, with a heavy canvas sheath.

Blade is thick enough, with a not so good edge, that has been worked on.

It's rusty, ain't pretty and well used, but does what I ask of it.

Ontario machete with or without a saw back about 26 bucks but come without a sheath i recently broke a gerber gator machete.

A 14" bolo or panga style machete should be thick enough steel and have enough weight at the tip to help make it a good chopper. I have a 14" panga style that I have sharpened the back of the tip on to use on vines as well that works ok. Otherwise, an 18" Tramontina is a great buy and with just a little touch up will be very serviceable.

I usually have a Gerber with a 11" blade, painted orange. Actually I have 2, one I found in the grass near an old blind. It is a bit corroded and not orange (most likely why it was abandoned), but still works. Saw blade on one side can be useful, but don't plan on cutting logs. I think they are made from stainless now.
