Otter is 8.5 months old

I think I have a duck dog. Today was a pretty good day.. It started at 10 degrees. We didn't see a ton of birds, but we saw enough. There should have been more birds in the bag, but the ones we have were good. After getting wrapped up in a decoy, he retrieved a triple mallard retrieve. The third was a VERY long retrieve. Next he made an equally long unassisted retrieve on Bull Can. On this one, he overcame his aversion to jumping off the boat. Next he went after a crippled Bull Can. He did not get this one, as it was a very fast swimmer and apparently a great diver, he put in a great chase. [strike][/strike]

Phil, Nice work for Otter. It sure is fun to watch a dog do what it lives for. We (Booker & I ) are very happy for you. Keep on banging, at least the river is open water.
 
Otter is doing, and looking great. How much time and work does one need to invest in training a duck dog? I'm wondering if I have enough time to train a partner.
 
Sadly... I was gone for most of Otter's first 2 months. My wife was with him. I worked on obedience. Honestly, outside of hunting, I probably haven't spent 3 hours on more than obedience.... Otter has quite a lot of natural ability and desire to please. Most CBR's are capable of doing most things on their own (IMHO) We simple share our lives, and homes with them. And give them a little guidance.

I think you and your partner will get more out of being around each other. The more you do together the better they will be in the field.
 
Otter definitely deserves a scratch behind the ears and a bone!

This is exactly why I have a CBR. I'm not a trainer by any means. I've only ever worked on obedience and followed the "nothing in life is free" training philosophy. I am Coot's pack leader but we are partners when hunting. I do my part and he does his. I'd be a fool to tell him how to do his job! I tell him what I want and let him figure out the rest. It's amazing to watch an intelligent dog do his job.

I'm glad to see Otter getting a good season in.

Well... With the help of Pete, Otter became... or at least acted like... a perfect well trained retriever...He launched off the boat... like a DOCK DOG...marked birds, and retrieved to hand... ON THE BOAT... used his nose... I am sure there will be some setbacks, but he is not even 9 months old and has come so far. Oh.. Today was Cans and GE's... and a damn puddle duck.. oh and I missed a sure thing on a Lesser Scaup Drake.

If he retrieves at this level for the rest of his life... I will be happy.

Phil it is good to see that Otter is keeping you full time company. Great looking pup! You have to be so proud.

Hey Phil, Otter is looking real fine there. It's good to see Pete making his way to the river. Looks like you guys did well today. Has the high water hampered your hunting much?
