We lost a fine boatman

I don't know how many folks here knew (or knew of) Dave Getchell, but if you didn't, you missed meeting one of the finest small boat seamen ever. His obituary is here: http://obituaries.bangordailynews.com/obituary/david-getchell-sr-1929-2018-1071288715

Dave literally wrote the book on small boat seamanship: https://www.amazon.com/Outboard-Bo...preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch, was the editor of National Fisherman and the founding editor of Small Boat Journal.

Dave toured the coast of Labrador on a month long mountain climbing expedition in an 18 foot open boat. He was also the visionary behind the Maine Island Trail, which lets people cruise the coast of Maine and camp on islands all the way--almost all on private land.

I have no idea if Dave hunted ducks, but if he did, he'd have been a fanatic and done it very well. I once ran into Dave on a Cape Cod beach during a blitz of stripers on a cold day in October. We knew each other a little because we both lived in mid-Coast Maine and rubbed elbows with some of the same folks involved in local conservation. Dave was about 40 years my senior, and I couldn't come close to keeping up with him on the beach. Neither could anyone else--and it was a week when a lot of serious fishermen were on that beach and fishing hard.

Truly a life well lived. He will be missed by many, but never forgotten.

Good morning, Jeff~

A great tribute to a truly inspiring man. I read SBJ for a number of years - but knew nothing of Dave's other accomplishments and activities.

All the best,

SJS
