Mandarin duck sighting

FYI:
For anyone interested in Ornithology or the identification of ducks and has an interest in seeing a live Mandarin duck, there is one hanging out in Central Park, NYC. It's a very beautiful duck and an extremely rare occurrence to see one here; especially given the fact that the weather has turned cold the last two weeks.

lol

if it was the goose that laid golden eggs - i would be hard pressed to go into NYC to see it [cool]

but
Mandarin ducks are really a colorful bird- a woody on steroids. there used to be one on a farm pond close to a road that was on one of my cycling routes. i assumed someone had bought it as a decoration in a garden pond in one of the nearby housing tracks, but it decided to live free with the mallards on this pond instead

I read about this a while back. I'd put good money on it being a local escape. But from what I understand its not banded, so who knows???

Bill, my buddy lives on Peconic Bay on Shinnecock Canal. He feeds a lot of ducks year round. Had a mandarin male coming to the yard. The mandarin chased the mallards and black duck off the corn and really intimidated them all.
If his was late feeding, he would hover in front of the picture window...Pretty Bird...
