Glad Sam had a good 1st hunt & that Thomas had a big day!

I took Youri out for our 1st try this morning. He is 7 going to be 8 in February. He hopped right out of bed at 3:00 and had lots of questions on the way to the dock.
We got to the dock and it was a lot choppier than we thought it would be, a 10-15 & gusty east wind had the bay we had to cross pretty whipped up. As we hunkered down in my partners go-devil boat, I sat him down on a seat cushion on the floor and covered him with my rain coat. He was ready to go.
Well, 1/4 across the bay, we started taking spray over the bow. My partner was running the boat and he was far enough back to miss most of it. Youri was wrapped in my rain coat and he as fine. But I took the brunt of most of the spray (especially since I did not have my rain gear on!). 1/2 way across the bay and I was soaked & starting to get cold. I turned to my partner & told him I needed to head back. By time we got to the dock, I was shivering. Youri & I headed for the truck while Tracy headed back out. Youri was disspointed but took it like a trooper. I promised him we would try again soon.
I felt bad, I pretty much went out unprepared for the conditions and payed fo it. But overall, coming in was a smart move, I could not have stayed out there soaked to the skin. I'll get him back out soon and hopefully we will have calmer weather and better luck. THis year and maybe next he is just going to watch & learn. After that, I will be in the market for a youth 20 gauge.

Carl, every duck hunt is a learning experience. Get that boy a rainsuit, they will stay warmer in regular cold weather with one over their hunting clothes too. I bet he was excited just to do what you did and will remember it well.

Good decisions are impresive to a youngster as well as bad ones. He'll know when the right ones are in play.Good hunting.

Carl,

Been there done that! That's a hard call sometimes but as your son grows and has to make those calls himself we'll remember.

Take care,

Ed L.

Tell Youri that was a test run and he came through the test with flying colors. Next time it's the real deal. Keep us updated on future excursions.

He's ready to go again any time I ask!

Next time I will make sure I have of my raincoats in the truck. He had his jacket on but no rain paints. That's why he got covered with my rain coat. Next time I will be better prepared. Hopefully that will be this weekend.

Good luck this weekend Carl and get some good quality time with Youri. You done what every other father would do sacrifice yourself. If he'd gotten wet and suffered like you did he may never wanted to go back. I've done the same thing in different situations and never have my two boys brought it up. It lets them know it's ok to realize your limitations and may save his life down the road.
