Painting Divers

Well now that it is too damned cold to cross country ski here in the winter wonderland of Minnesota I am looking at sprucing up some Decoys.
I know there was a tutorial somewhere on using paint from Home Depot that had the specific colors even listed but I can?t seem to locate it.
With the huge wealth of knowledge on this site I figure someone can point me in the right direction!!
Fixing up G&H cans, bills and golden eyes if that helps.
Thanks
Bob

Good morning, Bob~

I have a bunch of painting Tutorials on my website. I recognize that they could be easier to find - I just need some time to reorganize the menu and ID some more keywords to help Google find them. (Right now everything is under the How I Do It tab - but I will try to add separate Decoy Tutorial tabs on my home page).

There are numerous species; here are Canvasback:

....and Whistlers:

Hope this helps - and stay warm!

Do you spray the block with matte polyurethane after painting?
I thought it may help with the paint holding up longer?

Bob~

I do not - but will defer to others with more experience. I tried some - I think Krylon matte lacquer - many years ago on some E. Allens - gave too much sheen for my taste. I have not tried Testor's DullCote.

All the best,

I,m not an expert by any means but have used Testors Dul Coat many times to protect paint on various repaints. Its the best I,ve found but also most expensive I,ve found as compared to Rustoleum & Krylon products. It is truly a mat finish when sprayed in thin coats in low humidity. No cloudiness as sometimes happens with others. The right humidity is the trick and of course temps. Specifies on spray can working ranges. It does a good job of paint protection and I use it on every batch I do.

It?s made Mainly for model aircraft & armor so hobby shops or Walmart should have it.
It?s much flatter than anything else on the market.

I actually have my wife pic it up at hobby lobby but most well stocked craft stores should carry it. I haven,t found it at lowes or home depot stores.

And in low humidity too. It will fog in high humidity. I completely messed up a 1:48 Corsair one summer day in AL, so i know first hand!

Carl~

A day with low humidity in Alabama? It sounds a bit like "summer" in Maine - which I believe fell on a Tuesday last year....

More seriously - I guess I'll have to experiment with some Dullcote when it gets warmer (although it's nice and dry in my shop all winter, I avoid using too many sprays if I can).

All the best,

SJS
