Washington Post Article

My brother in law just sent me a very interesting article on Dan Carson from Havre de Grace from and his decoy carving , that was in the Washington post February 26. Most interesting..

Soooo, Delbert"Cigar" Daisy and Frank "Goldie" Coombs ( I picked him because he championed high-head decoys as stool that would work in pulling-in birds, countering the common contention that decoys had to be depicted as content resting birds.) are now artisans....how interesting!!! I am quite sure they would be impressed by this "elevated" status.

Isn't it interesting, in our current era, that self-sufficiency and self-reliance has come to be "quantified" and celebrated this way.

High heads were used on the Upper Bay to help hide the sinkbox aka battery. They were used way before old Cigar came around. They bring a good price now days.

Fritz, methinks they were done with high heads so that the guys picking them up had handles to grab onto..
Between the wing birds and the sport being in a coffin, below the water, along with the incredible number of stool put out, the ducks were pretty well destined for market.[;)]
Hope you wander down to havre de grace sometime during the festival.

Fritz, please note that I stated Frank "Goldie" Coombs, as the carver who championed high head decoys...not "Cigar" Daisy. I believe that he was based up near Long Island, NY.

Hey George, Ill see you at the Havre dr Grace show. Most of my info. about high decoys and what they were used for came from Evans McKinney and Bob Litzenberg. Now the only one left to ask is my long time friend Jimmy Pierce. He will be at the show also. Good to hear from you my friend. Best Fritz.
