Dare I say I am back?

It has been quite some time since I have posted here, almost 2 years I think. Some here may remember me, some may not, and others may have been glad I haven't posted in a while. (Hopefully that last part really isn't true because I wouldn't want to have that type of legacy.)

Well, lots of things have happened over the past years. I appreciate the guys that have reached out to check in on my. I appreciate others that have asked around as well. This site had always been uplifting to me, and a place where I have met many folks with a similar love and passion for the outdoors, conservation, and ducks.

My son, and first mate, is all but grown. He graduates from HS in 3.5 months. He has taken an oath to serve in the US Coast Guard and has entered their delayed entry program. He will report for USCG Basic in Cape May, NJ on July 8th. His mother and I could not be happier or more proud!

The biggest reasons for my absence these past two years was twofold. My father-in-law had a stroke. At that time, they were living in FL. It took quite some time to work through the affects of the stroke and figure out a plan to move forward. Eventually the decision was made to move my in-laws to NJ where they could be close by and we could offer help. During the time leading up to the move north, buying a home, extensive renovations to make the home handicap accessible, etc, the unthinkable thing happened. My pup, the best pup in the whole world, passed. That was a devastating loss for me. I know many of you have been through the same thing and the memories of our past pups will never leave us. She was, without doubt, the best pup I have ever had.

It has been hard for me to think about jumping back in the boat without a dog. Friends have called and asked to hunt. They were willing to bring their dog along and handle the retrieving. Parts of me weren't ready for that. I guess the feeling now is, I am ready. I am ready to get back in the water. I am ready to get up at 3am and drive to the shore to see God's miraculous handiwork at sunrise. Watch birds fly over like rocket ships, and land in the decoys like committed fools. Watch the playful Buffleheads commit to their strafing runs over the decoys and splash down awkwardly in a low wave.

I hope you guys will welcome me back. I hope to begin contributing again, and in a meaningful way. I hope all here are doing well and continuing to pursue these things that make us smile.

For me, being back will mean a few things that I am greatly looking forward to. My two daughters have expressed an interest in hunting. I will be mentoring both of them and one friend through the Hunter Education process. I am really looking forward to, with renewed vigor, the ability to spend time on the water with my girls and share God's splendid outdoors.

Welcome back. I'm trying to get back into the loop myself on this page. Good to see you in Tuckerton back in September. Keep in touch and sorry to hear about all the not so good things happening in your life

Welcome back!
Life throws us a lot of curve balls, sorry to hear you've had more than your fair share the last two years.
Glad to hear your daughters are showing an interest.
My daughter is now 12, she likes to fish and will go out in the blind to watch but doesnt want to shoot. I'm good with that. Its just great having her out there.

Chad,
Welcome back.

I love your two quotes at the end especially, "do not feel sad for the man out on his own." Perfect.

With or without a dog the marsh and water are a place to restore one's well being.

Chad - so great to hear from you! I sure enjoyed when you and Mike brought the boys out. Need to do that again sometime! God bless! Pat

Good to see you're back, willing, and able.

One thing about this site- it IS very good therapy for both the heart and soul. Sit back and enjoy!

Jon

BTW, we like pictures...just sayin'

Thanks Mike. It was good catching up a bit at Tuckerton. Even though I wasn't hunting, I still made the drive down to the show to kick around a little and see some of the guys.

Carl, thanks for the welcome back. I have dragged my feet long enough on the girls hunting. MY youngest has been after me for a couple of years. My older daughter, has come around to it. She has her trapping license, so this is a logical next step for her.

Pastor Larry- Those quotes hold a lot of meaning for me. Especially living in a highly congested state like NJ, and work in Phila. There is no end to large crowds of angry people. Yet, that seems to melt away when you get out in the marsh. Witnessing all of the beauty and quiet this world holds, really gives time to reflect on those things that are most important to a man. Each bird has and hopefully will always, be closely examined upon recovery. The beauty in the feathers and design, for me, must be appreciated following the taking of its life. I try to never take it for granted as "just another duck" or seeking to get by bag limit. Actually, I can never claim to have filled my bag, because that has never been what its about. As for this site, it has largely struck me that a strong majority of the guys here appreciate this past time of ours for way more than a simple bag limit. Probably one of the biggest reasons I couldn't help form popping in from time to time to see what everyone was up to.

Pat- So great to hear from you. That hunt with Mike, Kyle, and Tyler was quite special. The boys are quite grown since that hunt, and the pictures are precious and certainly priceless. Tyler is now every bit of 6', strong and thin as a rail. He is a very hard worker and growing into a man. I really look forward to seeing the changes and experience that he will gain over the next couple of years serving with the USCG.

Jon- Thanks for chiming in. Still a great pic of your pup. I run into pictures of one of your old boats, not sure if you still have it, regularly and make me think of you. The old decked over v-bow aluminum boat. I still love that design and imagine it as being quite an effective tool. I am definitely looking forward to some R&R here on the site and out in the marsh. I look forward to being able to contribute again soon enough.
