Everything is bigger out west

Tried to get out for a dive in Newport with one of my buddies, but with the recent full moon and rough seas even the jetty fingers in the bay were pretty rough and the vis was absolutely garbage.

We decided to go clamming instead. We got a bunch of gaper clams. They are some funky looking bivalves and can get pretty big if there is a serious negative king tide. They are wicked dirty too, but we made a roasted garlic clam pizza with some homemade crust that was unreal. The big neck pieces are supposed to make great sushi so that?s what is for dinner tonight.

We got to see the infamous pacific brant too! I was stoked to be 10 yards away from these guys. The amount of waterfowl out here is unreal.

Also the rogue brewery is right in Newport and is an awesome place to check out. Every now and then they do garage sales where they sell random beers for super cheap. It?s basically ?free beer? lol!

Chris, They look like a cross between Long Islands hard clam and the soft shell [piss clam].
I sure miss both.

Better than the ?Soylent Green? from the grocery stores. Just gave it a quick crosscut to soften it up and a dash of soy. Good stuff!

I would be way more worried eating raw cherry stones back east, but I do that all the time. Even worse would be clams/oysters at a raw bar way overpriced and no idea how old it is.

We have actually been eating a lot of our own sushi, it?s a great quick after dive snack.

Shellfish, and wild mushrooms will sooner or later bite ya in the A$$.

If yer not willing to accept the consequences, don't roll the dice.

It's that's simple.

We all gotta go sometimes.

Looks awesome, love the shellfish. Pulled a bushel of boring old quahogs this week, sampled just a couple of the cherrystones on the half shell.

Keep up the pics.

For the moment.

Unfortunately Oregon might be go the way of the Dodo, following California?s lead. So we are going to watch how bad the guns regs become before we commit. We can deal with the stupid taxes and the overly inflated real estate prices but I?m not giving up my guns.

I?m not a beach person, but I couldn?t give up the bounty of the salt. We eat more seafood than anything else, especially now that we both spearfish.

Chris,

I may be heading your direction in a few weeks bear hunting if you want to explore the Oregon jungle. Another good past time along the coast!

Looks like you may have to be my tour guide at the rate your going.

Chris, I spear fish as well. What is your main species out there you target? This thread is useless without the pizza pictures.
