Bluebill build/stich and glue ?????????

I am going to build the Bluebill in the spring and I am curious to whether I can do the build in my unfinished basement rather than my garage. Are the fumes of the processes too much during the epoxing and fiberglassing processes? I do not want my house smelling like toxic fumes for the welfare of my family. Thanks. Wen Gartman

The fumes aren't too terrible, but, the dust will drive you insane. Suggest you build in the garage.

My son's issues are the direct result of "environmental poisoning" according to the docs, I made sure that I built the boat far away from the kids - even if I'm wrong, it didn't hurt to be absolutely certain.

I only let them in the tent when the tent shop was relatively clean. Why take the risk?

Wen,

I built a Broadbill a few years ago and even with the organic respirators and the best HEPA(sp?) filters I could buy I still came down with a respiratory illness that was diagnosed as whooping cough until some Dr. one day (after 6 months of coughing 'til I passed out) asked me if I was exposing myself to any chemical irritants. Duh!

Lesson: You can't take this hazard seriously enough!

Please do it outside.

There will be dust which will be created when sanding the wood or the epoxy and this will be picked up by your furnace (if you have GFA) and sent around your house. Normal air currents will also draft this dust throughout the house. Will your wife like that?

Secondly, from the organic vapor comment. Yes, it is an inhalation hazard and some people are truly allergic to said vapors. Others have a contact irritation to the dust. I see people with lung issues about 1-4 per month on inhalation issues so please trust me when I say use an organic vapor mask and do it outside with GOOD ventilation. On the mask, use a silicone rubber mask with screw on cartridges. The cartridge does AGE and goes bad, meaning you might have to break down and buy more than one set. From the sanding perspective, N100 rated dust cartridges are the best (so far) that are out there. Old standard was N95.

Sure, you can do it anywhere you want with no protection. Seen it done. Cared for a couple that have done it and reacted to it. Rare, sure, but why take the chance. JMO...

Good luck building, let's see some pics when you get started.
