Banding ducks and woodcock

Good morning, Zane~

Congratulations to your son! I, too, am envious - especially of the Woodcock. I have been savoring the great look I got at the big hen Woodcock I put off her nest yesterday afternoon - wonderful birds!

All the best,

SJS

HOW COOOOOOOL! I'd like to help band woodcock one day.

Out of curiosity how did your son and company catch the woodcock? Do they use pointing dogs to find them?

Envious of your sons youth and his chosen profession. As an older gent I can,t think of a more full filling vocation to immerse yourself in.

Your son's smiles say it all.

Does not get much better than that.

Looks as though he has a mighty fine hen Woodcock in his hands.

Best regards
Vince

From what my son relayed to me, the professor went to the location the night before to listen for the woodcock to vocalize called "Peenting"and to watch them do their evening display flights. Then the following evening the students went to the same locations and erected mist nets. According to my son they caught the birds rather quickly, collected data, banded them and released them. He said the birds did not struggle in the nets, just laid on the ground. Pretty cool. I'm actually surprised they were able to locate and capture using that method, but alas it worked. Who knew?

Roy, As am I. If only I knew when I was younger that you could actually get paid to catch ducks and Woodcock!
I think he is leaning toward Waterfowl biology (not sure I have the term correct) when it comes time to narrow down his major.

We have a decent population here near the house. I enjoy the evening flights. We have at least one nesting hen each year. Love to watch them!

Here is a good link with Woodcock vocalizations.

Woodcock have always been one of my favorite birds to hunt. There were quite a few in southwestern conn where I lived. My dad and I used to hunt them and grouse frequently: in a few hours we often would see 5 or 6 of each. Unfortunately the town grew so much there isn't any place to hunt and alot of the new landowners don't like guns or hunters. One day I was waiting for my dad on a short deer drive and just before dark a partridge landed about 20 feet from me and went into a small cave made by 3 large rocks. when my dad arrived I went over to the cave and had my hands on the bird and could have caught it except I was being gentle with it and it got away. If a fox or raccoon had come along he would have had an easy meal. I assume they usually roost in spruce trees or thick bushes! I envy your sons opportunity to do such interesting work !
