Crud on the lower unit

How do you get the crud off of a lower unit on an outboard motor. Just acquired a 2006 9.9 Johnson but it has a build up of crud on the lower unit.

Though I've never tried it on a motor, I wonder if toilet bowl cleaner would work. Clorox brand seems to work the best for me.

Or maybe something like CLR though I don't know how it would affect the finish on the motor. You could try warmed up water and white vinegar. That works pretty good for the water deposits on my shower fixtures usually.

I'd start with the above and then progress thru commercial cleaners. Lime away and cleaners for calcium deposits in the home should work well. As last resort,,,,,, a 9 inch angle grinder with 40 grit pads will cut thru most anything. [whistle]

I?d also try Iron Out. That stuff is amazing. Comes two ways - as a liquid gel in a spray bottle or as a powder. Spray gel is easier but costs more

At least he end of every boat I guess season I spray this on the hull and wait like 5 minutes. Hose off. Any scum/crud/stains on that white hull magically vanish. It is a miracle product. That and a Mr. Clean magic eraser clean and everything on the boat will ease.
