Anyone here an HVAC expert? Minisplit question for you.

I'm going to purchase a minisplit system soon but haven't found one that will work for me, yet, after numerous online searches (probably time for me to call a HVAC contractor). All the multi-room package deals I see have identical head units. I need two head units to service the following: 1) 1200 sq foot single room woodshop, say 3 tons, and 2) 360 sq foot attic room above the woodshop, less than 1 ton. Are systems such as this available? Can I buy a 4 ton unit and mix a 1 ton head with a 3 ton head? Any recommendations?

Eric

On the short term plan here too. There has been a lot of growth in the diversity of heads offered (ceiling units, for example) and companies offering diy units (only I head wall units). I?m hoping that there will be some innovation before times comes for me to do it.

I looked some more and found I can find a system with different sized head units. I haven't found the exact one I need yet but I am hopeful I can get one, even if it is a custom package. The heat this summer is killing me. I want to have it cooled by next June.

Not sure without looking up sizes available but you can have different size heads. Don?t exceed the size of your condenser. John

Have you looked at these LG mini duct free systems for your smaller areas?

I have a buddy that installed one in his camp (he's a licensed hvac guy) and it's incredible! Quiet, variable speed compressor and very low demand on his generator. Might be worth checking into. I think he paid $1100, his cost, for one. His camp is probably 600 sq ft or so.

Eric,

Are you thinking of doing it DYI? There is a least one company that will sell you the components and hook you up with an HVAC guy to pressure test and fill with coolant.

I would guess it would be a challenge to adequately cool a 1200 sg ft shop with just one unit.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet myself, too many other things jump the line!

P Taylor, I have looked at several brans but haven't made any final decisions. I do plan on going with a well known brand like LG, Mitsubishi, etc..

Tom, I plan to get some help installing it. I will run the power and pour the pad and could mount and install things, but will need an HVAC guy to make connections and charge/check pressures and do whatever else is needed.

Thanks.

Eric

Eric,

I have an 18,000 btu Mitsubishi single head mini-split in my 660 sq ft(9' ceiling) insulated shop. It easily cools and heats that space quietly and very economically.
