Any Pittsburgh Steelers Fans?

Back when Thomas was calling in competitions there was a kid who was two years older from Alabama and he just couldn't be beat. He was coached by Butch Richenbach of RNT fame. I think Thomas was relieved when that kid aged out of the youth division. In the Intermediate division he went on to win the World Championship if I remember correctly. Well today I'm reading some sports coverage and low-and-behold this same duck caller, Devlin Hodges, is an undrafted signee for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the first backup for starting QB. Reports are he's stunned the Pittsburgh faithful who never heard of the Samford QB before. Well he's on the team now with a good chance for playing time. Pretty cool.

Eric -

That is way cool!

Have been a Steelers fan since the early days, when they won very few games and did not have their own stadium.

When they did start to win, and win Big my friends and I in western PA could not believe it.

That said I do not follow them like I used to, nor any other NFL team.

Yet when I can watch a Steelers game up here in NY country I usually do. Now thanks to your post I have even more reason to do so.

Western NY, so that means da Bills, but not for me.

Yep... lifelong! I live an hour from there and had season tickets for a while. Although it's been tough the last few years!

That's hilarious that you knew him. Small world!! His nickname with some of the radio guys is "Duck Dynasty". There was a spot on the local news where he was duck calling on the Ohio River and trying to teach the newslady how to call. I honestly thought it was just the news exaggerating though and didn't realize he was legit!

He has a cult following with all the Yinzer's here. He was actually 4th and was ok but he way over-exceeded expectations so everyone thinks he's the second coming of Bradshaw now. He was on the practice squad and then they traded their #2 backup, then Ben went down... so he's the backup now. They've since signed a vet though so he may go back to the practice squad. Seems like a good guy though!

I plan to keep up more closely now, just out of curiosity to see how he does. Some of Thomas's baseball team mates are in the pros and others may be there in a few years. I'll be keeping up with them as well. Knowing the person sure makes you root for their team.

Even though the Pittsburgh area is not rich in waterfowling history there are, and have been many hardcore waterfowlers, and decoy carvers from the area. Lots more than folks would think.

Jim Schmiedlin at the top of the list.

I can't recall any that were not long time Steeler fans. When the Steelers were playing ya never thought of calling, even to talk about waterfowling. It just was/is not done.

Knowing the person sure does add to the interest, and it's a very good true story. Thomas has been very blessed to have such friends.

Could be that the Steelers future just got alot brighter, and just in time.

GO STEELERS!!!

Did you catch the game yesterday Eric?

Devlin "Duck Dynasty" Hodges got in yesterday against the Ravens when our 2nd string QB got knocked cold.... and actually came in and ripped it up. We lost due to our gazilllion dollar wideout fumbling in overtime, but the kid did great.

It was funny in post-game interviews, all the Steelers referred to him as "Duck". Thought of you every time!

A Steelers Fan since I was about four years old. I saw the game on Sunday and he looked dam good. Not his fault Ju Ju can not hang on the ball. Can't understand how the other OB got up off the ground after he was hurt. Not saying Hodges is Bradshaw or Big Ben or even Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam . Look them up they played on the Steelers. But now a duck calling QB. Last one of them was Phil Roberson. He did not play for the Steelers. But he did alright for himself.

I was at the hunting property yesterday and watched the Cards blow their playoff game with the Braves. Thanks for the heads-up. I'm going to see what video I can find of the Steelers game. Sure wish they had won.

Eric

He's probably going to be the starter this Sunday night against the Chargers, so you can see him then.

I'm sure the Chargers will have some time and film to scheme against him, but he came in fresh off the bench against the Ravens and looked like a veteran. He was fun to watch!

Kirk

I watched the highlights. Too bad the receivers couldn't hold on or they would have won. User comments were all very positive for Devlin. The Steeler fans are really behind the kid. Some of the comments were asking about his English accent. BWAHAHA! I guess they've never heard anyone from Alabama before. He sounds like everyone else I know :)

Yeah their defensive coordinator is from Alabama too and everyone says he has to translate for Devlin!

And the Stiller fans have NOOOOOOOOOOOO room to talk about goofy accents!! Ever heard a true Yinzer talk? We make yinz dahn south all sound like Shakespeare!

It's very difficult to see many of the Steelers games here in western NY, but I did get to see some of the OT of yesterdays game. Hopefully I'll be able to see more games in the future

Hey Anthony - Ya remember Big Daddy Lipscomb when he played for the Steelers, or was that before your time?

Back then when the games were on TV there was only one camera, black & white picture on our set. During the games the players looked like ants running around on the field, but we watched and cheered.

Kirk - Soon as I open my mouth and talk, most folks up here KNOW I'm from western PA, or some other very strange place...[smile]

Surprisingly there are some Steeler fans up here, and lots of families came from western and north central PA.

Vince-

Steeler fans and Pittsburghers are EVERYWHERE due to the mass exodus in the 70's and 80's when the mills closed. There's an awesome article about Steeler Nation written by Scott Paulsen the old DJ from WDVE 102.5 that sums it up really well. You can read it (hopefully), here: http://steelcurtainrising.com/2015/07/scott-paulson-steeler-nation-wdve-pittsburgh-diaspora.html/

Kirk -

It took me awhile to leave, after losing jobs a Westinghouse, Sawhill Tubular, and Sharon Steel when they closed down. No one bailed us out.

Many of us just moved on to other jobs in western PA.

I wanna puke when I hear folks these days worried about no bail out, and loosing their pension, home, marriage, etc., when their place of employment shuts down.

JOIN THE ******* CLUB!!

WDVE was a great radio station back in the day. Now I'm gonna read the article that ya posted. Thanks

Kirk -

The article pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Man I had to smile when I read the reference to IRON CITY BEER.

My uncles owned three beer distributors in Western PA. I spent time delivering lotta beer, much of it IC.

Jim Schmiedlin worked at the old IC brewery, and retired from there. Even made some decoys from the wood from the old vats.

If ya hunt ANF. The Iron City Camp,is a historical location in the National Forest. Wish I had a dollar for every time I hunted that area.

I may have to make a trip SW soon. Gettin' kinda home sick...

Sunday Night Football on NBC October 13 at 8:20 pm . Steelers vs Chargers. No! never saw big Daddy Play. But I did read about him. I just turned 60 August 5 of this year. I can tell you Teams and names of many Steelers over the Year. Yes we were the worse for many years. Laughed at by many people. But we had the last laugh many times. Steelers Fans are a army, and the cover the whole USA. tHANKS

I?m in Somerset. The mines shut down there about the same time. My brother ended up in TX then.

I?ve hunted ANF a few times and fished it a good bit, but never heard of the Iron City Camp. I?ll look it up next time.

Give me a shout next time you?re home!

Kirk -

Watson Farm Road, off of Rt.66 will get you to the Iron City Camp area. Not much there really but woods...

Will do!
