How do you set your eyes on decoys

Guys I have finished a few more decoys and when I clean the paint off the eyes I get a white ring from the base paint around them. What is your process fro setting eyes?

Geoff Vine has posted one right on topic.

My Head Carving Tutorial also addresses eye setting.

No problem revealing the underpaint when you clean around the eyes. Just repaint with a thin coat of the appropriate color(s).

All the best,

Jeff, why are you using white as your base? Wou might try black or burnt umber.
This may gross some of you our, BUT, before taking crud off eyes to expose them, I usually apply a bit of spittle to that area. After about a minute, the stuff around eye seems to loosen, making it easier to remove. I also use a U shaped gouge to aid in the scraping.
Now, it may be necessary to find another method if you are painting with oil, but, not basing with white may be the solution to your ring around the eye problem.[;)]

Thanks guys, I tried using a "wash" of dark color around the eye but didn't think it had much affect. I learned about sealing decoys in a class and we used Kilz so I stuck with the white because of that. I suppose I could just seal with spray and then use a dark base to save the issue. I like the curved gauge idea gouge and pre working it with some spit.

I have tinted my kilz primer so that it's grey or brownish grey so that it is darker and I also scrape the primer off the eye before painting final colors so that the final paint overlaps better... sometimes.
