First season without a Pup

I had to say goodbye to my little Mollie Dog on Sept 24th she would have been 7 Oct 12th.

I will try to post some fun duck boat pics with her when I can find them.

I am looking for ideas of what to do with her ashes as well as my 2 previous Chocolate Labs Hershey and Maggie. For sure I want to make at least a call with some of Mollie ashes and maybe a extra special goose call, as she would howl like I have never heard a Lab howl when I used my Goose call I made some years ago.

I know you,ll miss that pup. This spring I had to put down my 13 yo BLF Missy. I had George Williams make a Blk. Dk decoy urn for her as a gunnin decoy. She,ll go on one last hunt with me & friends that hunted with her over the years once the Blk Dks get down this season. Hope to shoot one more for her and after that spread the remainder of her ashes at the spot she made 100,s of retrieves at over her years. After that she,ll ride out my time on earth in her decoy on the mantle. Each retriever you raise and train takes a bit from you when they pass. Fortunately I started a little CLF anticipating that day and she in turn is special at 2.5 yo.View attachment IMG_3293.JPG

Andrew, I am so sorry to hear about Mollie. It sucks to lose them any time but when they are young, it really, really sucks.

This will be my first season without a lab. To be honest, not having one to join me was part of the reason why I didn't end up going teal hunting (it was also about a bajillion degrees and a combo of work and home stuff got in the way).

It's funny. Before having a four legged hunting companion, it didn't matter. This year without Drake to join me, even just to sit in the boat and look at me bored out of his mind....it's definitely different. I don't like not having a lab to go out looking for ducks with. I will still hunt ducks this year but it will be a sad season in some ways. And hopefully come spring time there will be a lab puppy coming home.

I had Drake cremated and right now he is currently hanging out in MT, keeping Steve, B and Belle company. At some point, some of his ashes will be scattered amongst some of the places where we had the best hunts, so a little of him will be scattered across the country. Then hopefully later down the road (a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time later) what remains of his ashes will be mixed with mine and all the other dogs I will have in my life and we will all be set free at once. During the hunting season, his collar hangs in my truck. So, in some ways he is always going hunting with me.

The people who cremated my boys had some very pretty boxes to put them in. I never really thought about finding them their own box. But a decoy urn of her favorite bird, or the most memorable bird you ever shot over her, would be a nice way to store some of her ashes.

Again, I am so sorry to hear about Mollie.

So sorry to see the news Andrew. It's been 1 1/2 years since I lost my yellow.

I'm going to make a working decoy that I can display on a shelf with one of the last Canvasbacks he retrieved that a friend mounted for me.
