Devlin Boat - Sponsons - Outboard tilt pins?

The sponsons on my Scaup prevent pulling the outboard tilt pin while mounted on the hull. I have heard reference to replacing the pin with bolts, but I don't see how that works? If I use bolts, they will need to be long enough (I assume threads in) to have the motor rest on the threads? Seems to me the threads will get trashed and make removing them if I want to change to tilt in the future a challenge, and or they will chew up the motor where it will rest on the threads. I was also concerned that bolts might put stress on the bracket, and break out the holes at some point? What am I missing?

I used cap head bolts (head to the inside) and the motor rested on the head no problem.

Dave, Eric,

The pin just barely clears in the motor well on the BBIII. I understand how the motor can rest on the head portion of a cap screw or socket head bolt, however what holds the motor when in reverse? On my Yamaha the reverse latch engages the cross pin near the middle of the pin.

Boat is in Brian Garman?s shop, paint drying for a day, motor is off. We tried offsetting, but it made the interference with the sponsons worse. Will need to trim them as you and others have for sure.
