In lap dust collector

I'm looking to make an in lap dust collector and I'm curious what you guys suggest for the fan, dust collecting unit. I looked a several homemade units on line. One guy uses a 13 Gallon 1 HP Heavy Duty High Flow Dust Collector from harbor Freight, $155.00

Another guy uses an inline fan, attached to a lap table with a cloth bag to collect the dust. the inline fan runs about $15.00 plus shipping. Below is a link to the fan he uses and a link to his page.

Does anyone have a home made unit they use? Something similar to above? I like the idea of the inline fan. It is cheap and takes up less space, but wonder if it will do the job.

Keep an eye out for an old Jet 610DC dust collector. Lowe's used to sell them and I see them from time to time on CL and FB Marketplace. It would do a nice job for your intended purpose and you could probably get one pretty cheap, like under $100.

Eric,
I have been looking for just that or something similar. I need to see one in real life to get a good idea of the size. I'm not sure where in my shop it will fit. My son has taken up blacksmithing and is filling every available nook and cranny with his much needed equipment, LOL. The lack of space is why I'm considering something smaller/ more portable. I did come across an old post by MLBob Furia about making an in-lap dust collector. Throughout the post there were some good points made about the health issues of cork and wood dust. So now of course my thoughts have turned to a more comprehensive dust collecting system. I usually drag the dust making projects outside and work on them in the driveway, but winter is project killer.

So now I'm looking at a Wen air filtration system, as well as the dust collector we discussed and maybe some smaller DIY dust collectors to place around the shop and garage. If you have any other ideas or suggestions on the subject of dust collecting I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Zane

wear a good respirator, those bags don't filter the real fine stuff and that's the stuff that can really cause some health issues. I installed wynn filter on my big DC.

I know the Tornado 1000 is expensive but I'd buy another tomorrow if something happened to mine.
