Hello Everyone! Its that time of year again. When I keep my club busy putting up wood duck boxes. We will be placing 25 more wood duck boxes out this month. Unless the weather turns bad and then we will have to wait until next month. We will be mounting a bunch of them on post and with guards. The rest will be place on trees. Last year was a really good year for our boxes. I hope the guys down South got to enjoy some of our work this past season. For almost forty years we have been placing wood duck boxes out in the wild. We have built and bought mallard nest in the past as well as goose nest. But now days all we do is wood ducks. We have placed close to a thousand nest over the years. Its lots of work even if you don't build them yourself. But well worth it ! when you see what can come out of those boxes. I hope where ever you are, buy or build a wood duck box And then put it out in the wild. I can promise you this ! If you have success in one box you will be hooked. Take a kid or a friend make it a big deal.

Wood duck boxes are set to go in next week, This will put our count up to about 185 in the last four years. If only 10% takes that is still a lot of birds. We have had great success in the last few years so I hoping it keeps up. This is good for everyone. The hunter the bird watcher. From north to south ,from east to west. Keep your eyes out for the wood duck in the spring.

Down here late in the season, the blackbellies begin using wood duck boxes for nesting in! I have gotta put more boxes out in hope the black bellies will have lots and lots of large broods

Wood Duck boxes are a great way to help the wood duck population. It takes time to build them or buy them. It takes time to mount them. It takes time to check them. And lots of time to keep track of them. With that all said! its worth every second to me and all the people that do it. Not to many things in the water fowl world can a small group of people make a difference. Wood Duck boxes work and produce a large number of wood ducks every year. We have failed many times with wood duck boxes . But we have learned to take the bad with the good. Many ducks are lost every year to predators. We can only try to put as many boxes out as we can. Last four years we have had great success in our boxes. With guards without guards they work. In trees on poles they work. Snakes get theirs, coons get some, turtles eat them, that is just nature. But with all that. I am here to tell you if you take the time. You will see more wood ducks. Kids , women, men that don't even hunt have to love the work you do. Your putting back to nature and who doesn't like that.
Thank You for the nice words.

No doubt you put a lot of effort into it. Wood ducks need more stewards like yourself. The owner of the property I have been given permission to hunt recently passed away and his sons have inherited the property. I think I will take it upon myself to clean out the boxes on the land and get them ready. Thanks.

Eric
