Is it possible to car-top a BBSB???
I used the search deal, but came up blank. I know it sounds totally crazy...the lightest ones must weigh about 180lbs no gear right? Is it possible to rack it up onto a pick-up canopy? I'm sure its hard on the hull, flexes the heck out of it, but if a guy wanted to pull a little camper trailer, and take a Barnegat is it possible? I know theres a company here in Oregon called EZBoatloader that sells a rack that might be possible to use. I was just wondering if anybody has see this done, or tried it with a BBSB? I was just thinking in the off-seasons camping with the family. Thanks

I would say yes and no since it sounds like you already have ne, you are most likely out of luck. I certainly would not want to try it with my MLB widgeon. BUT... This year at the Pnte. Moulliee show there was a fella either sharing space with Mark R of the MLB's or next to him. This fella was a real nice guy with a heavy eastern shore accent and was selling a BBSB variant that looked light enough to do it with. I wish I could remember the name but I do recall being told that the name was connected with a trmendouse amount of waterfouling history. The boats looked sweet as well. If anyone knows who I mean chime in and refresh my memory.

I haven't got one as of yet...been a dream for years now. But I'm in a position again to start looking.

I am int eh process of building two strip model BBSBs right now that will not top 100-110 (maybe less if I am stingy on epoxy) lbs plus whatever seat and oar arrangements I add. These are 1 inch strips bead and cove with 6 oz glass on the outside and 4 on the inside - two bulkhead frames. My perception arcadia kayak weighs in 80 lbs and I cartop it all the time and am planning these boats for car-topping.

Derek, Be sure to post some pictures of your build. I'm real interested in how the bead and cove works. We nead this kind of eye candy. Pete

Seth,
I built a Poleboat last year to cartop on my Silverado. It works fine BUT it weighs 110 and I wouldn't want to wrestle one more ounce up there especially tired, wet and in the wind.If you are going to put it on the tent trailer it should work fine. BTW I built my loader after buying one from Cabellas that was an absolute POS. If you are interested I have some pics. Good luck.

If you had a low pop-up trailer it would be possible. I think you stand a chance of hurting your back or dropping the boat if you use a cab-height roof rack. Even a light weight BBSB is a bit more to handle overhead than a kayak or canoe.

Devlin Broadbill only weights 110lbs. If you use 1/4" okoume and 3 oz glass you can probably get it lighter. James Staudacher (sp) built one out of 1/8" okoume as a car topper.

Derek,
I second the post on photos of your bbsb build. Building a bbsb is top on my list of projects to take on in the future.

My quest is :
Can you load a BSSB in the back of a pickup and can you pick it up without breaking the fiberglass?

I looked a box that was small and light enough to load in the back of my pickup but the transom would twist and pop the glass.

I suppose I'll have to get a BBSB first and go from there he-he. My scull-boat weighs about 130lbs and I top it I was just wondering if anyone had a all-glass BBSB they managed to get onto a canopy. I've been thinking of building one of these a put a BBSB on.
How cool would this be? You could camp anywhere. There's a door on each side so you could add a tent vestible and tent on either side for another room, then add a awning in the stern over the kitchen area. The front half has a queen sized bed in it. You could park anywhere and nobody would know you lived in it. Its only 16ft long. A hunters dream...we'll see if I can sell my wifee on the idea though he-he. Thanks again-Seth
