They don't all make the cut. This one went from the lathe to the floor in an unplanned, yet very smooth swan dive. [w00t] Always a potentional for operator error and/or wood failure when turning a bowl. Especially when turning punky wood.

The first photo is where the chuck jaw blew out the dovetail it was engaged in, to drive the bowl round and round.

And this is the result of the swan dive from the spinning lathe to rolling on the floor. Ouch,,,,,[pirate][pirate]

Brad,
Started with the what would be the inside face, on a worm screw and the tailstock up against the piece. Rough turned the outside, shifted the tool rest to the headstock side and removed as much on the inside face as I could reach. Shifted the tool rest back to the outside of the bowl, moved the tailstock out of the way and cut a recess in the rough turned bottom for the chuck jaws. Removed the blank, turned it around and remounted on the expanding jaws. I was in the process of removing the area where the worm screw had been. (no tailstock support)

I had made several cuts already and I don't know if I got a bit too aggressive or the wood just gave way. Another 15 minutes and I would have been ready to put the green turned bowl in a bag with the shavings to finish drying for a few months.

This is from a neighbors Sugar Maple tree he just cut down. He had no idea it was as rotted as it was and it was right up tight to his house. He had two trees took down, because they were expanding up against the house and roof. The rotting was a total surprise. I saved several log chunks but as I was cleaning them up today, I realized that I'll be lucky if I can get a 50% return on the pieces I've saved for blanks. The ones that I can salvage, should be some sweet looking bowls.

I think I would label it modernistic handmade sugar maple bowl and put it on CL. Might pull the. A fortune.
