New Gun, No Dead Geese, Lots of Fun

Well I finally got to spend time with my youngest son. Its been hard during this Virus. I'm high at risk and he lives in a area that was hit very bad with the virus. So for almost six months we only talked or stayed far away from each other. If he did come upstate. Anyway ! we got out on the Hudson River with a ton of goose decoys and drove the boat deep into the bays grass. With a large spread ! I knew the geese were going to come in at dark or close to it. My son got me a Tri Star over n under. Wetland camo twelve gauge. It shots 2 3/4- 3- 3 1/2 inch, really nice. As we sat there in the evening ducks of all kinds were coming in. A few teal almost took our heads off. Wood ducks and mallards were landing in the goose decoys. About half hour before dark the wind changed. I knew this was going to be a problem. But we had to many decoys out to pick up and move. So I told my son were staying here. He agreed ! Just at sunset the first flock came in to the bay. Of course no where close to where we were. Five minutes later a big flock came in high over our heads. My son wanted to shot ! but I said their to high. Minutes after this a few small flocks came in followed by a bunch of larger flocks. It started getting dark fast . Half hour after sunset we unloaded our guns. Sure as you know what. When we were starting to pick up goose after goose were flying low over our heads. At one point I almost reloaded my gun. But I knew better ! and what kind of a father would I be if I did. My sons a man and he acted better then me. I guess whats in your blood is always in your blood. As we were picking up the rest of the decoys and I mean you could not see your hand in front of your face. Ducks and geese alike were touching down on the water. I didn't get to shot my new gun at a goose. My son didn't get to shot his new gun at the goose. But when the day was down. I felt like I limited out. I laughed and remembered what my dad told me many moons ago. It not what you shot you remember so much. Its the stories that got you there in the first place. Anthony,

I'm glad you had such a fun hunt. It sounds very exciting. I was out the second day of the early goose season this year, in the same general area you hunt on the River. I saw and heard zero geese on the River. It was disappointing. I tried another one of my local spots as well a few days ago and again, no geese seen or heard. Perhaps I'll get out again some time soon. Hopefully you get out again and connect on a bird or two.

It's definitely the stories that got you there in the first place! I'm glad you were able to spend time with your son.....those are memories he will cherish a lifetime.

My friend they are out there in full force ! those dam geese. Right place and right time that's all my friend. Keep the faith and get out there again. Been hunting this great river for many years. You put the time in and she will give you what your looking for. The Third week is always the best I have learn over the years of early goose season here. Yes the first day is great ! if you like to hunt around people enjoying the last days of summer. But If you want to wack um and stack um. Then the third week is for you. The tide is everything of course, but if its right its on. Good luck hope to see you out there my friend.

Well my friend I have been doing this for most of my life. And I have killed my share of ducks and geese. But I rather remember the stories of the dogs and my friends that I enjoyed those hunts with. I really could careless now days if I get a bunch of birds. Seeing and shooting and enjoying my friends and family out there is heaven to me. Thanks for reading my post I enjoy all of you guys and gals on here. A new family that I enjoyed for sometime now.

My Friend you said a mouth full. God , Family and friends ! and a few good dogs over the years gave me enough enjoyment to carry me a life time. I know so many guys to even this day. And I'm 61 that call it a bad day if they don't full their rigs with birds. I really don't care about that. These nuts put bird after bird in the freezer and I'll bet you never eat them. So to me they are killers NOT hunters. I rather wack a few or not, and enjoy the ones I do get. And eat them sooner then later or even in the boat that same day. To me the stories are what you go for .The gifts from the sky is what make the stories a little better. Just being out there free of lock downs and people trying to tell us how to live is good enough for me. Thanks!
