South Shore Waterfowlers Duck Boat Show ????

George, I called and the answer is that the STATE owned property could not be used because of Covid 19.
It's the only show for the year so should be a good one.

The site we used for past years is controlled by the Town of Babylon Parks Department. They are not granting any permits currently due to Covid 19 concerns. The VFW Hall was available and the rear yard is large enough.

I'd really like to go but with Covid it's simply not worth it, or even a consideration. Also, whose idea was it to host it the second Saturday of duck season?

The Town of Babylon park area historically used is a campsite. They won't allow SSWF the use until after the camping season. Which is late October. Long Island zone doesn't open until late November.

Thanks for the info on the date. The show is great, but I don't get the dates during hunting season.

Good morning, Tod et al~

The Long Island Zone Duck Season does not open 'til around Thanksgiving. So, no LI waterfowl season is open.

The earlier SSWA Shows - maybe the first 15 or 20 years - were scheduled in early to mid-November. The thinking then was to give gunners time to have their boats all thatched up. The earlier dates tend to be warmer - so seem to bring out a bigger audience.

Here is Al "Mister Decoy" McCormick - along with Al Griswold (SSWA President at the time) - at one of the earliest shows, at Heckscher State Park in the early 80s. This would have been a Sunday in early November.

Another early Show at Heckscher. Friend Tim Chelius brought his cedar Barnegat - with a nice rig of McCormick Black Duck stool (the Geese are Beans). I believe that Subaru once spent a fraught Christmas Eve half-submerged on a slippery boat ramp - waiting for the tow truck.....

Here's another from the early 80s....

I will miss it this year - only my third time? - because of schedule conflicts. We'll have to show the McDuffie Scooter next year....

All the best,

SJS

Thanks for the pics Steve, I love those. When I said "hunting season" I was generally referring to fall, not a specific waterfowl season being open or not. Even though I try not to hunt on the weekends, It is tough to dedicate time, weekend or not, to a show during the fall. If I have the extra energy for anything, it would be hunting of some sort or shuffling gear around.

I've only been a couple times, but it was a great show. I'd like to take Gus to some to these shows and I have some stuff to sell at some point.

Don't forget the Long Island Duck Boat Show this saturday, hope to see the crew. Oh, just found out about the Veterans 2 day extra season.
Heard Dave Clark will be bringing down some new boats.

There's a Karl Ehmer butcher shop on the opposite (east) end of the parking lot for something to eat.......what a shop....

Ohhhh.....bummer......you're right, thanks! But now you owe me some smoked pork chops and kraut!
I resumed it was the other one that's hosted the decoy shows before.
See you there?

17 boats --- 12 vendors --- temperature was mid 60-s. A good day. Plus I was able to get a George Roberts Canada Goose.
