Stories of years gone by

Here in Up State New York our seasons are over. And its cold as heck out. So I thought I would get some of you all to tell some old tails. Days gone by if you will. Stories that made you a duck hunter for life or things that happen to you while duck hunting good or bad. Many times life goes by so fast we forget to share stories with each other. When I first was around duck hunters the stories of the sky being black with ducks. Or the size of the guns that were mounted to the front of boats. The bags of ducks the old timers took off the River. I have know idea if they were true or not. But I loved to hear them from the old timers. I am sure you all have heard these stories if your up there in age. You know like how they use to walk . Up hill five miles in a snow storm bare foot to school.
Anyway! Years ago about twenty years I think. When Field and Stream was our internet. When Sears and JC Penny sold guns. I was looking in the back of the Field and Stream magazine. I saw this picture of the coolest boat I ever saw. Well to me it was. It was a Out Law Pro 18 from the State of Washington. I tore the back page out and mailed it in for a free video. Weeks went by before I got the tape. When I watched It I fell in love with the boat. At the time I was out of work with a major injury. And was feeling really bad about myself. So I asked one of my Brothers if I could get a loan from him. He said yes! when I told him I needed twenty thousand dollars for a duck boat . He said I was nuts!!!!!!!! But he still gave it to me. So I put the order in. A few months went by and here came my boat. I was so happy! until I had a doctors appointment and the doctor told me .I will not be returning to work because of my injuries. My life was turned upside down. But I had a new duck boat. My first trip that season was up North to the big lake. Me my other brother and a friend. On this trip it cost me a ton more of money and almost my life. Mill Foil ( NOT SURE i SPELLED IT RIGHT)is a weed that grows and grows to it chocks off a area. Well we were hunting in a spot where this crap was growing out of control. We found a good spot where the ducks were coming in .We set up and dropped anchors. When daylight hit there was about ten other hunters on land and in boats right in gun range. We got one teal. I was so pissed. My friend wanted to drive. So I got on the front of the boat and started pulling in the decoys. Each decoy weight about fifty pounds with all the weeds on them. My friend started the boat thinking I had all the decoys in all ready . The anchor rope got caught on my leg and started pulling me into about twenty feet or so of water. Thank God !my brother grab me or I would not be writing this. That's not all. My friend set his new shotgun on the top of the boat and knocked it into the lake. Tried to blame my lab, but I wouldn't have any part of it. My dog was up front with me at all time. He then laid my brothers brand new push pole across the boat and knocked that in the water. Gone Gone Gone, Then he thought the anchors were up and caught the anchor rope pulling the anchor up . It hit the prop and took one of the blades off. Some how he got the prop to work. But little did we know we sucked up so much of that mill foil .That we burned out my NEW 90 HP motor. All this and we had one green wing to show for it. But that's not all. You know it was a all out battle who shot the teal. When we load the boat someone forgot to take the teal off the back of the boat. As we are driving down the high way on the way home a spinning wing duck flies out of the truck in front of us almost coming threw my wind shield. All the way home we thought the teal fell of my trailer. But sure as heck when we dropped my friend off at his house the teal was still on the back of the boat. True story! And YES!!!!! I still have my outlaw and still love it. Got a different motor on it. But I enjoyed every trip I went on .And every hunt that I used it. Its a story, and a hunting trip I will never forget. That teal cost me thousands of dollars. My friend hundreds of dollars and my brother about the same. But we went right back the next year. And did a little better and only cost me a coffee pot. Story for another time. Thanks

Anthony, I am like you in that I think those old Outlaw boats were the "cat's meow" I have always wanted one but wasn't able to justify the money for one in the early family years. when I got to the point that I could have afforded one; they were no longer being made as a result of the lawsuit against the company for the design and supposedly cause of the death of some hunters. there was a used one for sale here in the mid west several years ago that I "just missed" out on. it was sold the same day that I heard about it. oh well, that's ok; I really don't need another duck boat. Four is enough.

Derek

A man loves what he loves. I couldn't be any more happy with it. I have had my boat for more then twenty years. It has never missed a duck and goose season. Killed many of birds with it, as missed many also. But! truth be told I wouldn't of wanted any other boat. Hunters did lose their lives ,that is very true.
But many people die every year in boat accidents . Water was really ruff that day from what I read years ago. Warnings were out all over the place. I wasn't there and know nothing about it. But I do know any boat can over turn and fill up with water. Outlaw boats are still out hunting. Company been gone for a long time. Was it bad business, or a bad product. I'm saying bad business. And I have over twenty years of proof. That the product was good . Well the one product that I got was. Derek if you find one and it was your dream to have won. Even if you don't buy it . take it for a ride. That much you own it to yourself. Happy New Year. my son and his dog, They are outlaw decoys on those stalks , use that for markers now.
