ATC Mud Boat progress

I have the bulkheads in and it is stitched up... I am not sure if I will do any more be for spring or not. I made my Scaup in January of 2015 in an unheated garage, using tarps and heat lamps.... not sure there is much benefit, as I doubt that I would save more than 2-3 days of build time once the weather is nice.

I am not sure if the bow and first bulkhead are at the height that I want them to be. I can cut them down if I decide to...

Either way.... here she is....

Stitch .... like sewing.. Stitch n Glue method is how I build... vs.. the other way??? Butt joint...

Using wire or zip ties to stitch or sew the panels together, to be followed by the glue.. which is thicken epoxy and glass. Devlin boats are stitch and glue.

Got it. I see the zip ties now. I think it would be great to hunt out of a boat I built but don?t have the tools to build one myself. I do tie my own flies that actually catch fish! That is about the extent of my creative side 😅

Jig Saw....and/or skilsaw... and belt sander... that is all you need.

It mean absolutely nothing to me to hunt out of a boat I made. I make my own, because it gives me something to do, and it is soooo much cheaper to make than buy.

Looking good Phil. Heat lamps by Feb? We know you can't stop once you get started...lol

I REALLY want to wait until warm weather... and NOT do the heat lamps....

BUT you might be right... I may be impatient.. and pull out the heat lamps and tarps...

I need to determine the ultimate height for the bow and forward bulkhead. The one think I know is, I will not flip it until spring. To glass the bottom with tarps and heat lamps SUCKs and takes too many.

What's the transom angle ? Are you building it to run with a outboard as well or strictly a mud motor ? Also what mud motor do you have in mind?

Approximately 14 degrees.

I have a Kawasaki 29HP on a Backwater longtail frame.

I intend to just run a mud motor, but who knows

Nice Phil. Do you run a lot of skinny water?

I will run more in the future! LOL The Scaup drafts about 9 inches... so, there are areas that I can not get to when the river is at normal levels. The last 2 years... it has been 5 feet high for most of the season, so it has not been an issue recently. But there are areas that I am unable to access. There are also marshes that I want to be able access. I don't see this being anywhere as seaworthy as the scaup... Every boat has it's purpose... and limitations... depending what you are trying to do and where.

No, I don't have a Snow Goose. I have a Duckwater 21... Honker (sold ...waiting pickup) ... Scaup... and soon to have this ATC.

I think the Scaup (as I made it) will handle anything that the Honker or DW will... but much slower, with much smaller payload. It will probably not be as enjoyable either.... I have been in 7 footers... looking up at the crest of the wave, while in the trough... on Lake Michigan. I have yet to be in anything in the DW that I would not have taken the Honker out in. I have been in the Scaup, when I wish I had the Honker... If all of that makes sense....

Phil,
looks like you are off to a good start. I'd have to do plastic and heat lamps. Otherwise, I would be sitting on a stool all weekend drinking beer and looking at he boat waiting for Spring to arrive.

You are off to a good start. What I'm really interested in hearing when it is all done is how it's construction compares to a Devlin, in terms of time, money, and complexity, and what you like/dislike comparing the two. You may be the first person to build each.

I am not making it like a Duckhunter. I am making it stitch and glue... Just like a Devlin, other than it is a flat vs a V... That saves time in lofting and assembly.. and fewer feet to tape and epoxy. I have $1000 in wood, and $1200 in glass and epoxy... plus freight. I am doing 2 layers of 10 oz glass and 1 layer of 5 oz Kevlar from the shear clamp down. I don't see much difference between the two.. because I am making them the same. I really don't see why anyone would not make them SnG.

This seems to be far less complex... or I just know more now.
