I don't usually shoot goldeneyes....

...but when I do, I make sure that they're a Barrows! Got this young fellow last weekend on the closer for my part of the state, as the title says I usually give goldeneyes a pass but something told me to pull the trigger on this one, which ended up being a Barrows, which is a first for me! Now I get to see if a Barrows tastes any different than a Common...

Congratulations, Cody!

Although you pass up Goldeneyes as a rule, I will bet that you nonetheless savor their presence - especially in their bold winter plumage. And, those whistling wings, especially when they are over ice in light airs, are one of Nature's grand performances.

All the best,

SJS

Very true Steve, I love to watch them work, they seem to be either at full speed or landed on the surface, and many times I've enjoyed watching them swim around in the decoys. They are quite vocal birds for divers!

Congrats on the Barrow's Cody. GEs are one of my favorite birds. I doubt that I am the only guy in Montana with GE decoys but I haven't seen anyone else with them yet!

My friends and I will often run Goldeneye decoys even if we don't intend to shoot them, they show up so well on the water and they seem to be a magnet for other divers. I always try to mix a few black-and-white decoys in with my puddle duck spread for visibility, it seems to work!

I hear you Cody. I like to watch GEs fly up and down the river all day. I also have a couple of dozen coot decoys that I mix in when hunting divers. They fill out the spread and divers seem to like seeing them.
