Wood Duck Box Clean out

Not sure if we will be building any wood duck boxes this year. But I have decided to take a group of my club members. And have a huge clean out project. We have more then ONE hundred and twenty or so boxes out in the bays and swamps in our area. And if we can clean them out it will be like putting that many new boxes out. Last year we could only clean out a few boxes. Because of the lock downs here in New York State. We did put out twenty five new ones last winter into the Spring. I'm here to tell you that wood duck boxes work great. I have been doing this for many many years. With great success!!!!!!!
Yes ! you need ducks in the area you place them. And yes! you will fail sometimes. But when a box hits its a great feeling. When ducklings jump out of the box its such a great moment. You did something great for nature. Do your part clean out any old boxes if you can. Build a box and watch the magic.
Its people like us that give back year after year to what we love. That makes us special people.

Good morning, Anthony~

Good job!

I am waiting 'til next week's single digits to strengthen the ice a bit more. My boxes are over water - so maintenance is easiest when we can walk right up to them.

All the best,

SJS

Great project and thanks for your dedication. I like how you've got a small team to work on this project with you. That must add a lot of enjoyment.

You inspired me again. I have three boxes in my attic that need repair and three in our little creek that need spring cleaning. Right after our late goose season here in Indiana and Michigan I will be tending to Wood Duck housing.

Great work as always Anthony!

Our local lake is down 5' feet here in South Carolina. I clean out my boxes in late September as I anticipate this winter drawdown. Hopefully our lake will fill up by the end of February and I'll find a hen or two already laying or sitting on a clutch!

I cleaned out my nesting boxes in S. Louisiana for my Black Bellied Whisters during hunting season. They were definitely used too!

I know most box plans show using 12" wide material but I have seen this plan too and I believe it would work or could be modified to work just as easily.

I went out on our local lake yesterday to sink a Christmas tree and these woody's are paring up near 3 of my boxes.

Why would you sink a Christmas tree??

Fishing habitat. Our lakes are loaded with Christmas trees which provide cover and egg laying area for fish and protection from predators for the fry. Crappie love them.

Yep, good way to recycle Christmas tree!

That and brush piles on your favorite rabbit hunting property.
