This weekend I had 10 species of ducks use the open hole (only open water) around my dock. I use a bubbler to protect the dock from ice damage. About a 125 yds from my window and enjoyed watching through my spotting scope.
1. Mallards 2. Black Ducks 3. Common Mergansers 4.Hooded Mergansers 5. Cans 6. Redheads 7. Bluebills 8. Buffleheads 9. Ruddy Ducks 10. Goldeneyes
I've not seen that variety before on our reservoir.

How much fun is that? Good for you for the having that to watch and look at. I've never seen either a redhead or canvasback while hunting.

It's fun when they are in your own backyard! The enjoyment is more prolonged (maybe not quite as gratifying) when just watching and not shooting.

It?s mostly mud and rock bottom and not much vegetation but there are mussels and a small stream enters nearby so I suspect some invertebrates? It is about 5-10 feet versus out in middle where 20-60.

RF,
Your photo reminded me of spring migration pics I took when I lived in the Detroit area. These photos, mostly of cans with a few redheads thrown in, are from the north end of Lake St. Clair some years ago. I still get a thrill of looking at these pics. Someone mentioned they never get to see cans. Spring on Lake St. Clair is a great time to see them. And fall on the Canadian side near Mitchell's Bay. Click on the photos to blow them us and see the wonderful action and interaction between the birds.

Awesome! Brings back memories of my layout shoots in Mitchell?s Bay in 80?s and early 90?s. Groups like that buzzing the layout so close you could hit them with your barrel. Thanks
