A neat find

This was my grandmother's brother's. He died when I was very young. Everyone in the family loved and looked up to him. He served in WWII in The Marine Corps in the South Pacific... including Iwa Jima. He came home with Purple Heart thanks to a grenade. The Cubs were looking at him before the war. But, this medal prevented the majors. He was a flame thrower... Never talked about that time. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. I wish I would have had the opportunity the spend more time with him

That is quite awesome. In a family of military brats and very few pack rats, finding old neat stuff like that is not likely to happen in my family.

Best I can hope for is to be reminded that my grandfather used to play guitar in bars with Elvis before he became The King. My grandma put her foot down and told my grandpa no way....you aren't going with him....he didn't...

That is a pretty awesome story too!

He lived with my grandparents for a while in his later years.. one of these things that I also have is his Remington 550-1 .22 cal rifle. It doesn't function... as it was disassembled when he died, and 3 pieces are missing.

Pretty cool find, and one heck of a story.
I remember by Dad having a black Olt duck call when I was a kid, dont know what ever happened to it.

That's funny. My dad played in a high school jazz band with Louie Bellson the drummer. After high school Louie wanted the band to go to LA with him. My dad said he was nuts and my dad enlisted into the Airforce. My Grandmother told him to go and give it a shot. She told me he always regretted not trying it. Louie Bellson - Wikipedia

Pretty cool find. I wonder how many of those OLT calls were produced through the years. Family of call makers from around Peoria, IL bought the OLT patents as I recall. I think they are out of Lydon, IL now.

Phil,

That is a wonderful find and good family heirloom. From the looks of it he put it to good use. Like the photo of the Greatest Generation. That was my dad's, and uncles generation. Very seldom, if ever did those men talk about what they did, saw and lived through. The epitome of unselfish.

P. S. Olt calls have been around a long time, with rich history. I've had my share. This Wood Duck call is at least 30 years old, never used cuz I always had other Wood Duck calls in use. Also have a old Olt, long "goose flute", that call makers worked on before Sean Mann came out with his.
