Aggravating neighbor dog and bark boxes

If this were my Lab, I would correct/scold/bad dog, bad dog, and physically hold my dogs muzzle closed as soon as the barking at the neighbor started. I would then go back inside, while leaving my dog outside. Immediately repeat as needed. It might be every two minutes at first, or it might be the next day. Eventually my dog would learn, barking at the neighbors is not acceptable behavior, no different than any other unacceptable actions.

I'll keep that in mind Dave if I ever end up with a dog that is a barker. Thanks for that....

I won't get my hands anywhere near the muzzle of the mini-beast next door though.

Oh I fully understand that!

I DID have to train my current dog when she was a pup.

Thanks for the tips. I am trying to work on stopping his barking. Our chocolate is what I call a type A personality. I walk him about 1.5 miles in the morning and play Frisbee with him in the afternoon to work off his energy. The earliest footage from the breeder showed him picking on his siblings. He will walk up to our Westie and start barking to trigger a response.

I work all day so play time is not always in the cards.

Hi Dani,

I am curious how these bark boxes affect other non barking dogs within ear shot? My two beagles can sometimes be a noise nuisance (mostly to me, because I can not stand barking dogs).

I have Garmin's Bark Limiter bark collars for them and they DO do the job, setting is on 3 out of 7. They also have tone and vibration settings, but these are shock collars that work off the dogs own vocal cords. They are $100/collar, but for me, it was a game changer with my beagles.

I hope you have some success in remedying the situation.

Have a great spring chasing gobblers!

Hey Troy.....

TURKEY SEASON STARTS TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bark box definitely bothered the other three dogs that weren't barking. It sent them running back towards their house and they wouldn't come over close to my side of the fence. Belle was outside with me but behind the box. I couldn't tell for sure if it bothered her or not because she was making her rounds chasing the butterflies.

The collars worked well enough on the yapper but they never remembered to charge it and it was always put on toooooo loose.

I'd try a completely different approach. Every time the dog barks, play the crudest rudest rap music (or Country) that you can find. Loudly through a huge speaker on a stand pointed directly at their window, If one was really creative, it can be hooked up to a switch that recognizes a bark as the trigger..

I'd only do this after talking with them one more time. Tell them you appreciate everything they have done for you and you appreciate them as neighbors - but - the dog barking has to stop. Tell them you will help train the dog - whatever it takes. Then let them know you don't want to call animal control but will as they are forcing your hand.

well - I'd be willing to bet who the local law enforcement would be talking to then - and its not the dog

sadly - unless the neighbor wants to be understanding and cooperative - it can only go south with confrontation

Taught my dog not to bark. Lots of No's, worst was a swat with the newspaper. Took a little while, but we both learned... I f the neighbors dog bark, record and play it back with the speaker up a little. May be they don't love country music???

What's wrong with country music???

An update so far.....I haven't been outside at home a great deal since I spent the weekend turkey hunting but the neighbors dogs....almost all of them seem to be avoiding the front yard fence near my house, including the PITA. The quasi deaf one not so much but he isn't a pain. We shall see if that continues.....

NOPE....they love them some country music....especially the old stuff...

hahahah Tod, glad to know that I make an impression

I moved into my house seven years ago! SEVEN!!! I can be outside for hours on end and there is one dog that will bark at me constantly. In the beginning I tried to make friends with her, like I did all of their other dogs. You would think after seven years, she would at least know I am supposed to be there (or at least not going anywhere) and quit barking after a minute or two. But noooooooooooooo. She is an idiot dog. She is a mean, mean dog. I have lots of names for her. Some amuse me and some should not be published on a family website.

However, it seems like the bark box is working. It only has a range of about 50 ft or so and it needs to be more line of sight so I will likely get two more since I have about 150 ft worth of fence between their fence and my fence. For the most part, the dogs now remain waaaaaay on the other side of the property. They are battery operated so I will likely get rechargeable batteries for them. It has made being outside a lot better. I am still contemplating the ultrasonic collar that it doesn't matter how tight it is around the dog, it works. But we shall see how the bark box continues working out.

That is great to hear that the boxes may be offering some relief!

I just had someone I know install a bark box for a similar situation, and it is working for them. So continued good luck and keep us all up top date, you never know, might get new neighbrs with a yapster.

I cured a past dog next door who used to do the same when i was mowing the lawn.
So, when I got to that area and the boxer came to the fence barking, I just turned the mower off and the load back-fire effectively cured him of that.
After a few episodes, when I came to mow, he high tailed it to the other end of the yard.
