NDR: Honest Quotes about Boats

I suspect some other folks here may be members of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers--a good group working to protect public lands and keep them open to hunting and angling. One of the benefits is their quarterly magazine, which has lots of "real person" writing about hunting and fishing on public lands. More info here if you want to consider joining. The magazine alone is worth the annual dues. https://www.backcountryhunters.org/

The fall issue just showed up at my house, with an article by a Navy guy who got relocated to Newport, RI, wanted to bow hunt offshore islands, and found himself shopping for a cheap boat and getting one, including motor and trailer, for $300.

Most people who have taken on a boat rehab project--especially one that starts with the craft in "interesting" condition--will find plenty of familiar observations. Here are a couple of my favorites:

"There's a foolproof system to ensure your boat purchase doesn't cost you an arm and a leg: buy a really, really shitty one."

"The original boat color was a mystery because of all the Bondo, putty sealant and spray paint."

"But it's amazing the lengths an outdoorsman will go to in order to get away from other like minded individuals."

I'm hoping the guy discovers RI's coastal duck hunting and writes again. This boat and an eider or black duck hunt would be a fun read.
