Bought a Duck dog

They said 50-60 lbs I don't want him much bigger then that. So far he's 4 months old listens well doesn't need a leash unless we leave the yard and can retrieve on water.

I had a Springer once they said would be 50 pounds max. He was 65 pounds at 18 months! Way too big for the breed standard, but he was a hell of a bird and water dog.

He was but I didn't speak to him. I spoke with a woman named Mauri she was very helpful. I know I'm biased but this dogs got a great little nose. Today we worked on place he picked it up quickly I'm very pleased so far.

He's got some big paws to grown into!

Good looking pup and it sounds like he's one of those dogs who's got "it". Heck, put him in the boat this year and see how he does!

Yeah Carl he's going to do everything but get shot over this year. He's good but I don't want a gun shy puppy. He will go scouting and I hope if he steady supply nicely introduce him to little boats like Canoes and kayaks.

Best of luck with your training program for Zeke. Now the fun begins and will continue for the years to come. I will look forward to your posts next year when duck season opens for you.

He is a good looking dog.If he has good bumper or retrieve drive and is displaying good confidence/independence. I would get a buddy about 100 yards away to fire of some shots while playing catch. If the dog doesn't have any bad body language move closer. Then hunt the little guy on slow hunts with a respectful buddy.

Yes, a dog should be trained that gunshots are good before getting into an actual hunting situation.

Yeah gunfire is pretty common around me so I don't think it will be a problem. I plan introduction just as you guys have described at distance and I have made up primed hills only then light loads in the .410

Easy way to work up to blank pistols latter is to make a racket with its metal feed bowl starting now each time its fed. Trick from Retriever Training book by James Lamfree. Used it for several dogs over many years and by the time blank pistol was introduced there was no bad reaction to noise

You always want to associate gun fire with something pleasurable to the dog. For instance a training Doken or bumper at a distance. It is best with two people. The handler holds the dog and the bird boy throws the bumper up in the air and fire's a primer or popper at the ark of the throw. The bird boy is usually 50 yds away. Then watch and see the reaction of the dog. If the reaction to the gun fire is favorable then move in ten yds at a time.
Best of luck, Tom
