The young 'un had his first real hunt today. Had a good day, I had scouted yesterday and found a lot of ducks for CT, but they flew the coop overnight. I was able to scratch out a couple, but it was slow.

On his way.

Well good on you!

Good job by Beaver too!

The successful start of a long relationship. Don,t a pups first wild bird retrieves just start the season great!

You made the right call, staying home for ducks. Nice retrieve for a young guy. Great hero shot against the barn wood, I'd put that on the wall.

Thanks, given the limited number of ducks, I think they will get stale pretty darn quick. I'm thinking I may make the trip up Tuesday through the weekend. I have the time, I should be living my life.

Good looking pup Tod

Thanks Guys, I'm glad with how he is turning out. He is a different animal than I expected - positive in nearly every way. I'm surprised at the drive to work that this little dog has, coming off a couple well pedigreed field trial labs, I thought the energy and intensity would be a step down - but, it is ratcheted way up. At the same time he is more of a people dog than I've ever had of all the dogs I've had in my life. Great match for me so far.

Agreed, there were few ducks this end of the state. Managed three for Gunner, two nice water retrieves and one wingbroke in the cattails. Lost contact with him in the weeds with the duck only 50' away, so went in to see what's up. Knucklehead thought he was bird hunting, locked up on point a couple feet from the crippled mallard. Looking at me out of the corner of his eye, wouldn't move a whisker off that point. Had to laugh. All in all, few ducks seen compared to long-term average.

Weather looks comfortable if you go, but still a lot of leaves. I'm going again in two weeks. Best of luck.

Sounds like you had a good opener. You should have seen the number of ducks I had found, I haven't seen it birds like that in years, only to blow out overnight before the opener.

Good information that the trees are holding their leaves still, I don't think I can swing that next week to let them fall. If anything can be said of my grouse wingshooting is that I do ok in heavy foliage, probably better than in an open woods. :).

Good to see a new pup at work, please share lots of pics this season!!

I'm glad you were able to scratch out a few. And it sure looks like your new buddy had fun. He is quite photogenic too! Cheers to a long loving working relationship.

Had another slow, but good day.

Started the day with a nice 60 yard real big boy retrieve.

Could use some work in the style department. Not the best photo, but gives a glimmer of what would make it an even better day.

This duck dog thing is hard.

Hero shot with jewelry. Called the band in and it was a local bird, but at least 4 years old.

Dang. Didn't take long for Beaver to figure out chilling in the duck blind when not much is going on. Smart fella.

How cool on the jewelry.

Very nice, good job by a young guy. Sixty yards is a nice get by a pup. Pretty spot, and Beaver has already mastered the apre hunt photo op.

Thanks, he is a very different animal from the dogs I've had, hunting with a young dog had that constant low level of frustration, but he is a pleasure and his style more than makes up for it. I'm excited to see what he grows in to.

That was a pretty strong crip and he lost it at the boat and it dove after I saw the band, I was sweating it for a bit, but it was on it once it resurfaced. :)

Thanks, some luck in that retrieve in that the surface was real calm around the duck and the duck was making somewhat of a commotion. Beaver is funny in the water he enters the water like shot out of a cannon, but is a slow swimmer (very methodical), but he never tires and doesn't ever get nervous in the water, just swims and swims.
