Weeki Wachee Florida
Anyone been here or live in the area? My wife finally retired so we headed out of town. She has a brother that lives nearby but they are new to the area. Had a great fresh seafood dinner but am seeing some if anyone has any suggestions on where to go.and what to do. We?ve heard about the Mermaid Show. I think we are going to pass.

All suggestions welcome. This is kind of an interesting part of the world. It?s own little community of canals and whatnot. Our place is right at the junction of a couple canals and we got here and saw manatees right off the patio. Pretty cool.

Thanks -

Mark

I am now in Tampa but we?ve spent time up in that area. Lots of paddling and great fishing. Supposedly there is decent duck hunting to be had as well but I have not tried it.
Manatees and springs are the big tourist draw.

HMMMMMM well, Venice Beach area has great shark tooth hunting.

Crystal River area usually has decent swim with the manatee tours. But if you are seeing manatees where you are and don't wanna swim with them, not a big deal.

The Peace River area has good fossil hunting...think like megladon teeth or mammoth teeth or other cool stuff like that. I haven't been on those types of hunts yet but it is on my bucket list.

How long will you be down here?

I haven't been to Weeki Wachee except to just drive through or by.

FL has a lot of decent microbreweries and distilleries if you enjoy that. There may be some around that area.

That far south I imagine you could go out to chase snook. Or find a guide that will take you out after snook. They are fun, fun fish.

I will think on other things....

Offshore (9-20 miles) the lane snapper, grunt and red grouper bite is on. Might need to come a little south to find a charter or party boat. Tarpon springs is a good place and excellent Greek food.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am pretty sure Diane won't be up for fishing anywhere, Right off our patio I can see 100 fish of various types and sizes under water. There are poles and lures at the place we are staying so we will see. We do have 4 kayaks here and I found a nice kayak route that takes us away from the houses along these canals and into "the wilds". Seems to be some decent dinner cruise type of activities (or lunch or whatever) which we might do. We are heading up to visit some friends at The Villages. That will be an interesting visit as he loves the lifestyle, not sure it is for me but we'll go look.

Here for a weeks and then back to ice fishing.

Check out Cape Coral in SW Florida. Lot to do. We house shopped there in Weeki five years ago. The sink holes made us have second thoughts.
We like the Cape since we are close to several beaches and other points. But most ducks stop before coming this far south. No frost here ever so its sub tropical. Other negative is it takes eight hours to drive out of Florida.

Mark, if you like golf then The Villages isn't so bad from what I have heard. Everyone who loves the place that I have run across loves golf though. I just don't like the idea of being that close to Orlando.

The Cape Coral area is quite beautiful and the fishing can be awesome!!!

Mark,

Several good ideas for you already. You might try Tarpon Springs, south of you. Cool old gulf side town that still has a working sponge industry. Some pretty cool historic stuff. Good music and great food in town. Stop at Captain Jacks just before entering Tarpon Springs. Usually has afternoon music and great Grouper sandwiches. Whiskey Joes at Port Richey is a fun spot. Make your way down to Dunedin. Several gulf side places to eat. Clearwater beach is always fun. Frenchy's and Crabby Joes are area favorites. My music partner, Darrel is in Brooksvile. He winters down there and knows some hidden jems. I can check with him to see if he knows any places closer to you.

Take care,

I tried hunting the mangroves in that area Carl. Miles and miles but you really need a boat with a mud motor. You can't get far enough away from the local residents (who for the most part hate duck hunters) and paddling and fighting the tide without a motor is NOT FUN!

Forgot to mention wild hog hunting. There are some guides in that area, fun hunting and good eats.
But that might not be something the wife is interested in!
Homosassa Springs State Park is pretty cool, we've been there a couple of times: https://www.floridastateparks.org/...-wildlife-state-park

Peaks Old Port Cove Resturant in Ozello FL [west of Crystal River] is a very unique place out in the marsh, about as far out as you can go in that area. They have very good garlic crab too and all kinds of other seafood. [ Like fried mullet] Worth the trip if you have time. I used to kill a lot ducks in that area too.
