what I do when the duck season is closed
Beautiful morning. Pleasant temps, light wind, almost did not need the heater.
Had my camera in the water and was able to sort thru the fish as I caught them. I'd pull the bait away from the Bluegills in hopes of enticing the Crappies. Released many smaller ones back to the water for another day.
Brought home a nice mess ranging from 9 inches to 11.5 inches in length. Fun time watching them come up and chase the bait on camera.

Dave something about that just doesn't square. Or were you getting a precisely square hole?

Tod,
Yep, and folks wonder why fish on commercial boats are immediately thrown on ice, rather than drug around on a stringer.

Well we know you were a precision machinist.

Dave, you had a wonderful day fishing. What is your limit per day? I just want you to know it was darn hard to type this post to you because I'm still laughing about what the others wrote. I have to admit that this is the very first time in my life, I have ever seen a fish measured like that. Do you carry a tape measure for those 40"+ northerns?

On a more serious note, why did you not want the bluegills?
I love fried or baked bluegills, just scale, gut & cook!

What kind of jig & bait?

Brad,
(A) We all know one can get a bigger fish up thru a square hole than the same sized round hole.
(B) Round holes are for amateurs; it takes a highly skilled operator to auger a square hole in the ice. Whistle

Al,
The limit here is 25 per day.
For Muskie, I bring along a drywall square.

I just used the speed square because I was home, it was handy, and it showed up well against the snow. It sure was a tough sell with this crowd! Cool

Carl,

Due to the available size of the Bluegills. In my area large Crappie are more abundant than large Bluegill. I use the same cleaning method on both species, fillet everything. I'm not real fast but I don't leave any meat behind.

Dave you must be referring to using the hypotenuse of the Piscisoran Theorem. Yes a larger fish could be brought through a square hole that a round hole of equal radius or center point/midline distance. This makes a great deal of sense when fishing for flat fish or panfish.

As a woodworker I?m sure you seen square mortises cut with a round bit in a square chisel. It wouldn?t surprise me to have you fabricate a square hole ice auger. And you are the square operator who could pull it off.
