Decoy ID for the gurus

Vince, I collected stuff when it was still possible to hunt over that which i scrounged. I even have an old hen from the RECKLESS that was used when cans reopened back in the dy. Those birds were treated to a mall rig thea their ancestors probably succumbed to a hundred years before.
Never in the market to muck about with
dealers. Generally, too pricey for me!

I agree George, but if ya wanna SEE and STUDY the decoys. The dealers back then had some of the best, that ya can no longer pick up and appreciate. Cuz their in private collections or museums these days..

Unless someone has a collection that you are welcome to peruse, most have to go to a museum to look at the decoys. Just lookin' ain't the same, at least for me.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to see and enjoy so many decoys from every flyway at the old Ohio Show. Very few shows had representations of so many old decoys.

For me the contests were always second, and old decoys first. The old decoys from the various flyways are my major influences, not contest decoys. Your contest decoys are the same as the ones ya gun over, and win blue ribbons with. Ya got yer own style.

Thanks to this forum, I'm still learning.[smile]

Best regards
Vince

Hey Nick - did your BIL share any stories about his grandfather's hunts? I started hunting on L. Ontario in the early 80s and I remember clouds of blue bills on the lake. I would bet that those blocks saw a good amount of action If they could only talk~! Nice looking blocks.

Really nice blocks Nick. Glad they landed in the hands of someone who hunts. My dads cousins have a few individual birds hand carved. None live in hunting homes. They get admired on every visit.
All the best with your new birds.
Bob

I have been watching those intently, hoping the price stays in my realm especially with the US dollar and shipping back to Canada. Nick, your decoys are really nice!

My collection focuses on the Dunnville area (where Anger resided), and am fortunate to have a few Anger knock offs and one Cecil Anger.

Mark,
I have a hen Bufflehead I picked up at the Pointe Mouillee festival a number of years ago.
It was carved by Thircul Church from Port Dover, Ontario. Are you familiar with him or his decoys?

Question about the relation of Cecil Anger to Ken Anger. The Description On G&D says Cecil was the son of Ken Anger. Ken Anger was a life long Bachelor.
Ken Anger was born in 1905 and Ceil was born in 1900. So that does not make sense. Any one no who Cecil was to Ken Anger?

Ken Anger?s decoys are hollow, crafted of two thick laminated red cedar boards. Anger joined the upper and lower pieces with glue and then drove a wood screw in either side to keep the pieces from shifting while drying. Afterwards, Anger removed the screws, filled in the holes, and inadvertently gave his decoys a unique identity. His cousin Cecil left the screws in and uncovered- the best way to identify either man?s work.

Mr. Ford's previous post.

I?m not familiar with that carver. A quick search shows a can he carved in the late 80s sold at auction for couple hundred bucks. There are a couple good facebook groups about Ontario Decoys if you want to find out more about him. Search ?Canadian Decoy and Outdoor Collectible Association? and ?Southern Ontario, St. Clair Flats & Toronto School Decoys.? I?d love to see some photos if you want to send them through PM or here, I don?t want to derail Nick?s post.

I noticed that sibling comment on G & D, I have also seen it listed that Ken and Cecil were brothers. Based on my research and discussions with Dunnville locals, they were cousins.

Just a thought.

For many years at the Ohio Decoy show, held in March. There were several Canadian decoy "experts", authors of decoy books, and decoy dealers that attended the show. Mr. R. Paul Brisco was just one.

It was at that show that I became aware of how many very good, and outstanding Canadian decoy carvers, and makers there are. Also there were many examples of their work to examine first hand. Plus very good displays, and talks given by the authors of books.

The show has reconnected the collectors & carvers this year after a long hiatus.

It maybe worth it to check the listing of decoy dealers, authors, etc. of Canadian Decoys that will be attending the show this year. There was always a very strong showing in the past, but that was then, and this is now. If so it would be worth it to check it out.

I still say it is a scaup, neck is too short to be a canadian.

Ya mean a CANADA GOOSE, or do ya call em canadian's.....

"canadian's" should not be singular possessive is should be a simple plural, unless it was a Canadian that owned those scaups, but I'm pretty sure Nick is from the states.
